Beer prices 15:07 - Dec 11 with 937 viewscolinallcars

Touched on by some in recent threads.
I just paid £7.30 for a pint of Landlord in the Cumberland in North End Rd.
There was an old chap in the corner nursing half a half pint of stale beer. The barman said if he doesn't buy another drink, he would have to leave.
The old chap retorted “look 'ere, I can go in any pub in London if I want to”
“Well why don't you then” said the barman. “I don't want to” the old boy replied.
You don't get that anywhere else.

What shitty hospitality. At £7.30, no wonder he couldn't keep buying pints. If he's not causing any trouble, let him be. Can't be that busy at 3pm on a Thursday. I popped in there a few months back for a quick one and was surprised at how expensive it was - not a particularly nice part of Fulham either.

The Barrow Boy and Banker was over £7 for a Guinness when we had Millwall away last season.

And like them or loathe them the story shows the role that Wetherspoons play in the community: the old fella could’ve had three pints for that money and wiled away as many hours as he wanted.

I remember in the old days you'd see an old boy on his own in a pub, pension day usually freshly purchased pouch of old Holborn in front of him reading the paper.

You don't see than now. (not just the smoking ban)

Yeah leave the old man alone, barman - he's part of the fabric of your industry you narrow minded gimp!

You're not going in the right pub.

Just back from Munich, where they have something called 'Doppelbock' - typically 8-9% or so, but here's the thing - every time you (almost) finish a glass (half litre) they bring you another without prompting. This cost me just over 5Euros a glass.

Now, consider this in some 'crafty' place this evening in Bermondsey in a street they call the 'Beer mile'.
Imperial Stout - now that's the closest thing I can get to Doppelbock. My eyes light up, I say I'll have a pint of that, please.
'It's served in thirds' says the guy, giving me one of those stares as if to say 'you're not from around here, are you'..
'Great', I say, 'I'll have three thirds'. I'm in a cheery, cheeky mood after last night's footy.
'Not allowed' he says.
'Ok, a third it is then'. Hey-ho, when in Rome, etc ...
He grudgingly pours it, plants it in front of me as if it's a dead beaver.
Thanks, I say. What's the damage'?
'7.70'
This is followed by another stare Oliver Cromwell would doubtless have been proud of whilst cancelling Christmas.
I'm now in a distinctly less good mood. I sip it.
Take me back to Munich.

If that's Fuller's Imperial Stout, then it's 10.7% so I can undertand the barkeep being nervous.
When I lived in Notting Hill, the guv of the Churchill would only sell you a pint of ESB if you took the empty glass up to the jump.

Any hardened drinkers fans of Tweedy Pubs on YouTube? A friend put me on to him recently. He goes round London picking out distinctive looking pubs, talking about their history and architecture. Very engaging and dare I say moreish, I loved his one on Kilburn, some strong connections for me there. Not his fault he looks like David Cameron’s younger brother. Apparently he does some bizarre wild camping videos too, Tweedy outdoors.
