Dad's been watching QPR for 70 years... 23:14 - Jan 23 with 11594 viewswestberksr

Just mentioned it in passing when we were sat there on Saturday.

Went to his first game aged 10 in 1948.

All I could think was "you poor old sod!"

Then I realised I've been going for 41 years and it's his bloody fault!

When we are away he even goes to watch Hayes & Yeading with a neighbour, having also followed Hayes all over the place as a youngster too. Bloody hell he's watched some shite over the years

I've still got the programme to this day (that's not my copy, that's an image from Indy Rs). Interesting that it was an 11 am kick off, I wonder why that was?

Another interesting thing is Arsenal wearing red change shorts.I might be imagining this but I thought back in those days (where teams wore their home kit whenever it was possible) there was some unwritten league rule that Arsenal never changed their home shorts for a kit clash when playing away.

If Arsenal played a team away who wore white shorts but no other kit clash, they never changed them to say red (like Forest would do) but would instead wear their yellow shirts/blue shorts away kit.

Can anyone confirm this?

Camberley, sorry it's from this rag but I found this online

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/5236566/arsenal-wear-red-shorts-west-bro

says they were worn against us in 1978.

found another link, same story but has a photo. it's not 1978 because Webby left us in 1977.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5224875/Arsenal-wear-red-short

Can't find the reason why they suddenly wore them against us though.

Thanks for that FB. I see that the picture with the game against us (both the Twitter and Mail pics) was from the Easter Monday '76 game (we're wearing Umbro not Adidas Kit and as you say Webby left in 1977). Interesting that they wore red shorts for a couple of years in the mid 70s and didn't before (apart from that one off in the snow) or for 40 years after.

I'm convinced in my head my 1st game was home to Rotherham around 81, a 0-0 draw, but I can find no record of it.

I feel cheated

Home to Boro, April 76. Won 4-2 , can’t remember who scored but they had a bloke called Willie Wooff that I always remember for the unusual name.
Went with my Dad and brother. Dad used to live on the White City estate and started going in the 1930’s. He passed away last year but left me with this curse!!😀

11am? There were a number of games that kicked off early back then, always around the main holiday periods, clubs figured people had other commitments to attend to. Don't think that Rangers and Arsenal kicking the snot out of each other at the back of the Loft the two previous encounters had much to do with it.

Fascinating thread. First game v Man City 1975. My mate told me Don Shanks was his cousin, so we went to see him play. I didn't believe him mind you. My main memory is the vein throbbing in Mike Summerbee's head when he took a throw in in front of us. He looked like he was about to have a heart attack.

I'm pretty sure your right , if it's the game I'm thinking of in 81-82 Gerry Francis got injured by sliding into the (left hand) post in front of the loft trying to score from a rebound. I think that might have been his last game for us ?

1st game on my own aged 10 1947/48 season was seeing us draw 1-1 with First Div Derby County in the last eight of FA Cup, lost 5-0 in replay @ Derby did not help having Reg Allen break a finger and went of injured. No subs in those days outfield player went in goal thereby not getting into Semi-Final [ Who says we dont do Cup Runs ].Never minded really because we were promoted as Champions that season with the help of Cyril Hatton getting 25 goals from 41 appearances from a total of 74 goals scored for the season Bournemouth were Runners Up.
Footnote. Not sure but I think it only cost 1 shilling/5 pence to get in.

If at first you dont succeed, pack up and f**k off home.

Not wishing to put a downer on this thread but something that still makes me smile when I think of it. Part of the last conversation I had with Mother before she died was her asking me how we had played on the previous Saturday, (both my parents where season ticket holders for many years). We'd beaten Ipswich 3-1 Easter Saturday 2000.

My first game was November 1948
We beat Northampton 2-0 and won The 3rd South League that season.
Our first ever promotion.

I can remember my first QPR game (away at Ipswich, drew 1-1).

I can remember my first game at LR (Watford in the cup, lost 1-2).

I'm fckd if I can remember the first time I saw us win.

Can't say I wasn't warned.

I think it was either 69 or 70, family holiday in Devon and dad took me to see a pre-season against Torquay.
I believe it was Phil Parkes first game for us.
First season I went on my own was 75/76, only home game I missed was Liverpool with THE goal!
Last game of the season against Leeds was probably the best atmosphere ever on The Loft, over 30K in the ground!
Dad started watching during the war years and had a season ticket in SAR until he died 8 years ago, he used to take me when I was little, I used to stand on a box at the front of the School End, no segregation in those days!

For those that weren’t there, and memories for those of us luckily enough to have been!
I was just behind the goal to the left as viewed from the pitch - pandemonium!
