We had a case of coronavirus here in Bordeaux.

It's been duly dealt with.

Imagine the frenzy if there was a case in Blackpool.

Coronavirus isolation 'pod' set up at Blackpool Victoria Hospital as businessman at centre of UK outbreak thanks the NHS

An isolation pod for any suspected coronavirus patients has been set up at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

The hospital has acted on the orders of the Government, which yesterday called the killer virus a "serious and imminent threat", although there are no confirmed cases on the Fylde coast, despite repeated rumours to the contrary.

All NHS hospitals in England were ordered to set up "priority assessment pods" where people can be isolated if medics fear they have the bug, which was branded an "emergency" for China, where it originated and has infected tens of thousands, killing more than 1,000, and a "very grave threat for the rest of the world" by the World Health Organisation.

If diagnosed with coronavirus in Blackpool, patients would be moved to one of several specialist units around the UK.

However, those who are displaying flu-like symptoms have been urged to self-isolate and call NHS 111 for advice.

Meanwhile, the businessman at the centre of the UK outbreak has thanked the NHS for his treatment and said he is "fully recovered".

Steve Walsh, from Hove in East Sussex, who is still in quarantine at St Thomas' Hospital in London, picked up coronavirus while at a conference in Singapore.

On his way back to the UK, he stopped off for several days at a French ski chalet, where five Britons were subsequently infected with the virus.

He is also linked to at least five further cases of coronavirus in the UK, including two doctors, one of whom worked at a Brighton surgery that has closed its doors.

Mr Walsh is also linked to one male patient taken ill in Majorca.

Speaking from hospital, Mr Walsh, a cub scout leader, said in a statement: "I would like to thank the NHS for their help and care - whilst I have fully recovered, my thoughts are with others who have contracted coronavirus.

"As soon as I knew I had been exposed to a confirmed case of coronavirus, I contacted my GP, NHS 111 and Public Health England.

"I was advised to attend an isolated room at hospital, despite showing no symptoms, and subsequently self-isolated at home as instructed.

"When the diagnosis was confirmed I was sent to an isolation unit in hospital, where I remain, and, as a precaution, my family was also asked to isolate themselves.

"I also thank friends, family and colleagues for their support during recent weeks and I ask the media to respect our privacy."

Earlier, Paul Cosford, emeritus medical director of Public Health England (PHE), said the four new cases of coronavirus announced in the UK on Monday were "not a complete surprise" because they were all contacts of Mr Walsh.

He said "contact tracing" run by PHE was"working very well".

He declined to say Mr Walsh was a "super-spreader" though he said he was aware of the term.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said: "It's nothing to do with their behaviour, it's simply a biological fact.

"We factor that into the contact tracing that we do.

"I should say that the people who are of concern are those who have had very close contact with somebody with coronavirus - face-to-face contact or within a two-metre range for 15 minutes or more."

He said PHE was working to trace the contacts of two healthcare workers who are among the four new cases announced on Monday.

"A small number of them will be patients who these healthcare workers have been involved with treating but it is actually a relatively small number.

"There is not a general risk to any patient of the NHS in that area. We will be - and have already been - identifying the people who have been in particularly close contact."

In Brighton, where several cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed, the County Oak Medical Centre closed its doors after reports that one of the doctors working there had contracted the virus.

Speaking to the PA news agency outside the centre on Tuesday, one patient, a 43-year-old mother-of-four from Brighton, said: "I was here on the 3rd and the 5th (of February) and they will not tell me the risk even though I am immunosuppressed with lupus."

She said she has called 111 several times but was told "the risk isn't known" and to stay in for 14 days if she feels at risk.

She said: "Nobody knows anything. It's a farce. Everybody is worried about it.

"No-one can protect themselves and we can't protect the public."

The pharmacy at County Oak Medical Centre would reopen on Tuesday, staff confirmed, but the surgery is expected to remain shut.

A second branch of the surgery is also closed.

Coronavirus: First death confirmed in Europe

A Chinese tourist has died in France after contracting the new coronavirus - the first fatality from the disease outside Asia.

The victim was an 80-year-old man from China's Hubei province, according to French Health Minister Agnès Buzyn.

He arrived in France on 16 January and was placed in quarantine in hospital in Paris on 25 January, she said.

Only three deaths had previously been reported outside mainland China - in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan.

However, more than 1,500 people have died from the virus within China, mostly in Hubei where it first emerged.

A further 2,641 people have been newly confirmed as infected, bringing the China's total to 66,492.

In late January, France became the first European country to confirm cases of the virus. It has had 11 confirmed cases of the disease, officially called Covid-19. Six people remain in hospital.

The deceased man had been in a critical condition in the Bichat hospital in northern Paris, the health minister said. He died of a lung infection due to the coronavirus.

The man's daughter is among those infected, but she is recovering, Ms Buzyn said.

Five of the cases in France are British nationals who caught the virus at a chalet in the ski resort of Contamines-Montjoie.

Outside mainland China, there have been more than 500 cases in 24 countries.

Earlier, the US said it was sending a plane to Japan to evacuate Americans stuck on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which is being held in quarantine in a Japanese port.

Out of 3,700 people on board, 218 have tested positive for the virus. Australia also said it was considering removing its citizens from the ship.

No flu jab.

Nose running like a drain.

I feel OK though.

I'm not adverse to medical check ups, far from it, but I also think that if you have jabs, your body and immune defense system will become weaker.

I'll push through this dip in form and be all the stronger for it.

Coronavirus: Two new cases confirmed in UK

Two more patients have tested positive for coronavirus in England, bringing the total number of UK cases to 15.

They have been transferred to specialist NHS infection centres in Liverpool and London, the Department of Health said.

The virus was passed on while they were in Italy and Tenerife, said England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty.

Ministers have said they expect more cases to emerge.

The new patients are being treated at specialist centres at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Italy now has more than 400 cases of coronavirus with authorities there reporting that 12 people have died.

And in Tenerife, 168 Britons have been told to isolate themselves at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel.

Globally, more than 80,000 people in more than 40 countries have now been infected.

The new cases in England come as the government is set to launch a public information campaign, which will focus on hygiene and how to prevent the spread of infection.

More than 7,000 people in the UK have been tested for the virus.

Of the 15 to have tested positive, eight have so far been discharged from hospital.

Many governments are getting twitchy I suspect spell; the repercussions on world trade could be catastrophic if the movement of people (and goods) is restricted further over the next month or so.

Many businesses will go bust, shares plummet, and doom will be on us...

Well, yes.

For example, you could buy something off the Amazon site and it could be delivered to your house from China.

The factory workers will have handled it a maybe even sneezed all over it.

Couple of things that bug (see what I did there) me about this is

1/ Can you trust the Chinese figures

2/ No cases reported in Central/Southern Africa. As most of that area is owned now by China and there are 1000's of Chinese workers and advisers in those countries, I find that fact strange. Might be because most have poor health care in those countries and haven't detected it yet.

Building large infrastructure projects are what brutal Communists regimes are good at. The workers have no option.

Coronavirus outbreak: Newcastle ban handshakes at training ground

Newcastle have introduced a training ground handshake ban because of coronavirus, says manager Steve Bruce.

More than 80,000 people have been infected by the virus worldwide, resulting in nearly 2,800 deaths.

"There's a ritual that everybody shakes hands when we see each other every morning - we've stopped that on the advice of the doctor," said Bruce.

"Thankfully, we've got a superb doctor here and he will keep us informed of what we have to do."

Bruce added: "We're like everybody else, we're glued to the TV for where it's going to go next and let's hope it doesn't get any worse in this country."

Major sporting events, including Six Nations rugby and the Chinese Grand Prix, have been postponed because of the virus, which originated in China but has since spread to more than 50 countries.

Three more cases of the virus were confirmed in the UK on Friday, bringing the total number in the country to 19.

The Premier League says clubs are following the same NHS and government advice issued to all businesses and venues which are used by large numbers of people.

There is currently no suggestion or guidance to take any additional measures, though the body says clubs are free to do so where deemed necessary.

Arsenal have introduced extra checks for media attending Saturday's news conference at the club's training ground, while Everton have contacted all staff informing them of the latest government guidelines.

Spanish La Liga side Valencia have cancelled "all meetings or public gatherings in enclosed spaces that present risk to players, coaching staff and club staff" after the first confirmed cases of coronavirus in the city.

A number of football matches in Italy have already been postponed or ordered to be played behind closed doors following an outbreak of the virus in the north of the country.

First professional footballer reportedly infected

An Italian-Nigerian footballer has reportedly become the first professional player to be infected with the coronavirus.

King Paul Akpan Udoh, 22, who plays for Pianese in Serie C, was diagnosed on Thursday and has been quarantined, media outlets have reported.

He was once on the books of Italian giants Juventus before dropping to the country's third tier.

Footballers worried about the impact of coronavirus have been contacting unions "out of fear" they could be forced to play in "high-risk environments", according to global body Fifpro.

It said in a statement Fifro said there was a danger of football "acting as a vehicle to spread" the disease.

"Our talks with various football stakeholders also address the rescheduling of international dates, including but not limited to qualifying matches for this year’s Tokyo Olympics and 2022 FIFA World Cup," Fifpro said.

AFC Champions League matches due to take place next week have already been rescheduled as a result of the growing outbreak.

I am of the firm opinion, and have been for several weeks, that all large sporting events in this country will eventually be affected and restrictions put in place.

As one of those in the `high risk` category I am very concerned about it, and am avoiding shaking hands and hugging strangers, especially near public toilets.

Be careful out there...
