According to Worldometers, there were nearly 36,437 new cases and 244 deaths of the coronavirus reported in France yesterday.
24,701 new and 310 dead in the UK.
It's a lot, too many, and the figures are increasing.
One opinion I've heard is that 'it's only old people who are dying'. Disgusting.
The initial period of confinement is 1 month but it's likely to be extended to 8 or 12 weeks.Have the government waited too lo,g and let the virus propagate before implementing strict measures to control it?
If, for example, action had been taken when there were 15k daily new cases + 50 deaths, it would've been easier to contain the spread.
It gives me a heavy heart to go into a bleak winter lockdown. I don't want to do it but we all have a collective responsibility to stop others from getting sick and dying.
Lockdown's a crap measure to take but it's got to be done. At the moment there is nothing else.
I'll do my best to get some last minute preparations (panic buying) done today.
Learning to read clusters is not something your eyes do naturally. It takes constant practice.
It shouldn't be inevitable, but it does look like it's heading that way.
Won't be called a "lockdown" here, it'll be called a "circuit breaker"
It's not about getting the death toll down as such, but stopping health services being overwhelmed.
Limited ICU beds, trained staff, 10+ years of austerity, under investment and three word slogans like "more for less", has come back to bite us.
I've posted before what they should/could do, just seems we've spent 100's of billions to be back at square one.
Really not a fan of this "rule by decree" with no scrutiny, leads to poor laws/rules. Sooner we get an inquiry the better, the dead and their families deserve answers, not holding my breath though.

Just a bit of anecdotal but possibly good news; a family member is a radiographer who scans all Covid patients at the hospital, and she says there is quite a noticeable difference with the scans in this wave, and the damage (to the lungs) is not anyway as extensive.
The hospital she is working at has only 3 Covid related patients and is well prepared for what is coming. The doctors and specialists at the hospital were predicting this second wave accurately in the summer ...

A load of wood for the woodburner that I've been meaning to get since mid September and through laziness haven't got round to doing.
Ditto fuel for the paraffin heater. I didn't end up getting any as it was carnage at the shopping centre I went to and I did an about turn when I saw the traffic backed up 1km from the place. A wasted journey. I'll get some in a week or so when the hysteria's died down.
Went to the local supermarket. It's smaller, a bit more(but not too much) expensive, and has a smaller choice but it was calmer. Only halfway to being a feeding frenzy. With us being off work tomorrow I bought enough food for 2 people for a long weekend. I didn't buy any toilet paper as There's already enough for at least a week. I did get an extra big bottle of whiskey though.
Topped the car up with diesel.

Chainsaw is booked up over Halloween, then I think JaneG might want to take it on her next trip to the USA if Trumpy gets back in.

This lockdown's not going to have much effect. Obviously, for economic reasons, the government's had to implement a halfway house fudge job of a lockdown.
As during the last lockdown, we're allowed out for 1 hour per day within a radius of 1km from our domicile.
I took advantage of this today to go out for a bike ride. Shocked. It was like a ghost town in the first lockdown. This time it was all hustle and bustle out there, slightly less busy than normal. I'd say activity is about 80% of normal.

If the Government leaks to the Times and Telegraph are correct, looks like we're in some sort of tighter restrictions as from Wednesday.

Bojo now holding press conference at 4pm today. Doesn't he know that's when the 2nd half kicks off? Bloody public school idiot.

Now sometime after 6:30pm, Bojo has sent an email to Tory MPs apologizing for the way this has been handled and that the leaks are not from No 10. Shambles

exceptions for which people can leave their homes, including:
for education for work, if you cannot work from home for exercise and recreation outdoors for medical reasons to shop for food and essentials to care for others
Takeaways will be allowed to stay open but pubs, bars and restaurants will have to close, says the PM.
Essential shops will remain open so "there's no need to stock up", he insists, adding that workplaces should stay open where people cannot work from home.
Support bubbles will still be allowed and children will be able to move homes if their parents are separated.
He says the government will not ask people to shield again "in the same way" as last time.
The PM says he is under "no illusions" about how difficult it will be for businesses - he says he is "truly sorry" for that.
He is extending the furlough scheme through November, he says.
Unlike the first national lockdown, schools, colleges and universities will be allowed to stay open.
Johnson confirms the measures will end on 2 December.
He says, at that point: "We'll seek to ease restrictions, going back into the tiered system on a local and a regional basis according to the latest data and trends."
Lots of new three word slogans
"Stay at home"
"Stop the spread"
"Hands Face Space"

Just the same as here then and begs the question 'when is a lockdown not a lockdown'?
I don't blame the government. Much more damage to the economy and the country could well go belly up for good.
There's no way that a 4 week inefficient lockdown will effectively reduce infection rates. I'll stick my neck out and predict that current rates will be kept in check.
I can see this half measure lockdown being in place for 3 or 4 months.

There were loads of people out and about. Cars, pedestrians, shoppers, dog walkers, all sorts circulating.
This lockdown's a hive of activity.
After the bike ride I did a 1 hour home gym thing including this half hour cardio boxing lesson. I do it holding bottles of water to make it a bit more interesting:-
Later in the afternoon. A couple of hours of work, preparing for the forthcoming week glued to the screen on TEAMS.
Evening - Sunday club.
