From Wiki:

"Flowers narrowly missed out on playing in the final itself. Jack Charlton who was due to play, caught a cold on the eve of the West Germany match. Flowers was approached by his manager, Alf Ramsey, the night before the final and told that if Charlton had not recovered by the morning he was on."

That must have been a sleepless night for the poor man.
Ar dheis Dé.
RIP.

He only had one season with Wolves after the 66 World Cup, when they finished as second division runners up, before moving to Northampton. I never saw him play but that's an impressive career.

Joined Wolves in 1952 and they immediately went on their successful period with three league titles, twice runners up and three times third. They also won the FA cup in 1960.
This was in a spell which partly coincided with the Busby babes and the Tottenham double team as well.
