Ukraine-Russia crisis: Donald Trump praises Putin's aggression as 'wonderful' and 'genius'
The White House has condemned the comments made by Mr Trump and said they try not to "take advice from anyone who praises Putin and his military strategy".
Former US President Donald Trump has described Vladimir Putin's aggression towards Ukraine as "genius", "wonderful" and "very savvy".
During an interview with podcaster Buck Sexton, Mr Trump said he backed Mr Putin in his decision to send troops to perform "peacekeeping" duties in the Russian-controlled areas of southeast Ukraine.
"I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said 'this is genius'," he told the conservative podcast host.

"Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine, of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful."
Ukraine and most Western allies view the move as an occupation of the region which could lead to tougher sanctions and more conflict.
However, Mr Trump was full of praise for Russia's "peace force".
"We could use that on our southern border" he said. "That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen. They're gonna keep the peace all right."
Mr Trump went on to criticise President Biden for his lack of response to the crisis, boldly claiming that Russia's invasion of Ukraine would not have happened when he was in office.
"I knew Putin very well. I got along with him. He liked me. I liked him," he said.
The former President claimed that Putin was a "tough cookie" but was "very savvy", had a "lot of great charm" and loved his country.
In a press briefing yesterday, the White House's Press Secretary Jen Psaki condemned the comments made by Mr Trump and said they try not to "take advice from anyone who praises Putin and his military strategy".
"So there's a bit of a different tactic, a bit of a different approach, and that's probably why President Biden and not his predecessor was able to rally the world and the global community in taking steps against Russia's aggression," she said.

Ukrainian guards who refused to surrender Snake Island posthumously praised
One story of Ukrainian soldiers stirring emotions right now is the story of the Snake Island battle - where 13 Ukrainian guards on a tiny island in the Black Sea refused to surrender to a Russian warship. They held their ground and were killed in a bombardment.
Audio of the guards’ defiant final words has gone viral on Twitter, TikTok and other social media.
The Russian ship tells the Ukrainians: “I suggest you surrender your weapons and capitulate, otherwise I will open fire, do you copy?”
The Ukrainian guards can then be heard saying “this is it”, before they respond with: "Russian warship, go f--- yourself."
Ukrainian President Zelensky praised the guards' bravery, saying they would all be posthumously awarded war hero honours.
“On our island Zmiiny [Snake Island], defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically. But did not give up,” he said.
"All of them will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously. Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine."

Robert Lewandowski has backed Poland's boycott of their World Cup play-off against Russia in March because of the invasion of Ukraine, saying "we can't pretend that nothing is happening".
Polish football association president Cezary Kulesza has said the team "does not intend" to play the game.
Russia are due to host Poland in Moscow on 24 March, while Ukraine travel to Scotland on the same day.
"The right decision," tweeted Poland captain Lewandowski.
Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski, 33, who is his country's all-time highest goalscorer, added: "I can't imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues. Sweden are also in the play-offs where they will meet the Czech Republic. The winner of that tie could meet Russia for a place at the World Cup finals, which get under way in Qatar in November.
On Thursday, Fifa said it would monitor the situation after Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic said in a joint statement that play-off matches should not be played in Russia.
"No more words, time to act." tweeted Kulesza on Saturday.
"Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.
"This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the Sweden and Czech Republic to present a common position to Fifa."

Roman Abramovich: Sanctions of Chelsea owner by UK government halt club's sale
Roman Abramovich's attempt to sell Chelsea has been halted after the oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian put the European champions up for sale after the threat of sanctions was raised in Parliament.
The freezing of Abramovich's assets, which include Chelsea, means the club cannot sell further match tickets.
The move is intended to stop Abramovich making money from Chelsea.
The government has issued a special licence that will allow fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket-holders to attend matches.
Season-ticket holders can still attend games for which they have tickets but the club cannot now sell any more tickets.
The club's merchandise shop will also be shut.
The government is open to considering a further addition to the special licence which will allow the sale of the club.
A condition for that to happen would be that Abramovich receives no funds.
He has previously said that proceeds of the sale would be donated to victims of war.
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has said the government is "committed to protecting" the club.
"Football clubs are cultural assets and the bedrock of our communities," she tweeted.
"I know this brings some uncertainty, but the government will work with the league and clubs to keep football being played while ensuring sanctions hit those intended.
"Our priority is to hold those who have enabled the Putin regime to account."
