Really gutted about this. Have had a soft spot for Virgin Trains for a while. Love the quality of the Virgin Brand.
Take my first trip on the new west coast provider on New Years eve day for a day trip to Edinburgh. Hope they live up to expectation.

When they first started they were bloody awful. Lost count of the number of times my train was late going to Scotland not to mention the times when they broke down in the middle of nowhere. (Once got stuck on a train on the border for over 3 hours, got into Preston at 23.30 and had to get a Taxi to Lytham, also the pubs had shut!!).
They did improve (they had to!). A friend of mine went to Glasgow last week with TransPennine Express first class, total horror story.

Ye to be honest I had a taxi from Preston job after midnight when travelling back from London, but that was over 15 years ago.

As someone who used their "service" around thirty times a year I have never been a fan :
* the design of the Pendolinos was hopeless for anyone with a lot of luggage
* they phased out cut-price deals to the point where they were almost impossible to get
* they had an annoying, nannying approach to announcements that made the Train Manager the most intrusive person on the train
* their self-congratulatory marketing was even worse, very Branson-esque
* and of course, when there were problems, their platform/station staff were never anywhere to be seen
I'd say "f*** off and good riddance, but they aren't worth the venom. | |

I always did well with the bargains, for example 32 quid total return for me and a junior to Edinburgh in 3 weeks is great. I only ever looked for bargains as a day tripper though and have never been reliant on them sufficiently to have to pay their normal prices. I suppose how you use them or how you have to use them makes a big difference.
And when Northern Rail is your local comparison you probably start off with terribly low expectations. [Post edited 8 Dec 2019 12:59]
