The EFL is gearing up to announce a date for the start of the new season and it could be confirmed today, says Rochdale chief executive David Bottomley

The EFL is preparing to confirm that the League One campaign will kick-off on September 12, according to one of Sunderland's third-tier rivals.

Sunderland chief executive Jim Rodwell said earlier this month that two potential start dates had been under consideration, August 29 and September 12, and as time has gone on it has looked increasingly likely that the later date would be chosen.

And in a statement on his club's official website, Rochdale chief executive David Bottomley has today said that he believes the EFL will announce 'within a few hours' that the 2020-21 season will begin on September 12.

That would mean the campaign would start behind-closed-doors, with the Government planning to allow crowds to return to stadia from October 1, although ground capacities are set to be severely limited.

In the statement, issued around 9am, Bottomley said: "I believe within a few hours of you reading this, the EFL will have announced that our season will recommence on Saturday, September 12.

"Initially, it will be for three weeks behind closed doors and then from October 1 with crowds present."

Clubs are set to return to competitive action even before the league gets under way, with the EFL advising them that the first round of the EFL Cup will be played on September 5, and an EFL Trophy fixture scheduled for September 8 or 9.

Sunderland have for several weeks been worked on the assumption that the league season would start on September 12.

And as soon as the date is confirmed they will take the players and coaching staff off furlough ready for pre-season training to start - most likely at some point next week.

Sunderland's last game was a 2-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers on March 10, with the Covid-19 crisis leading three days later to the season being halted.

The players have not trained at the Academy of Light since the country went into lockdown on March 23, and the players were furloughed in early April.

They were able to stay in shape at home in case the season resumed, but ultimately the campaign was curtailed on June 9.

The 2020-21 Premier League and English Football League seasons will start on 12 September.

The top-flight campaign will end on 23 May, while the Championship, League One and League Two seasons will culminate on 8 and 9 May.

The play-off finals will take place on the final weekend in May.

The current Premier League season will end on Sunday after it was suspended for three months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The regular Championship season concluded on Wednesday, with the play-offs finishing on 4 August.

Most League One and League Two teams have not played since March.

The Premier League said it would "continue to consult" with the Football Association and EFL "regarding the scheduling of all domestic competitions".

However, the start date for teams still playing in European competitions is still under discussion.

It remains possible they will be given a delayed start, given they could be playing well into August.

Last-16 ties in the Europa League - featuring Manchester United and Wolves - resume on 5 August, with the final scheduled to take place on 21 August.

Remaining Champions League last-16 ties resume from 7 August, with Manchester City and Chelsea still in the competition.

The final will take place on 23 August.
