Wycombe Pre-Match 17:14 - Oct 21 with 265 viewsspell_chekker

Our feeling is that Wycombe Wanderers should get enough chances to breach the defence of this Blackpool outfit, however it possibly won’t quite be as many as they’ll concede. Our tip is for both teams to score in a 2-1 win for Blackpool by the conclusion of the game.

Their prior results show that Wycombe Wanderers:

- have left without a victory over Blackpool when they have played them away from home in the previous 5 league games. They'll be keen to stop this run.

- remain unbeaten by Blackpool when they've played them away from home in the last 2 league games.

⚽️ What happened last time these teams met in this competition?

The last league fixture featuring the two was League One match day 27 on 29/01/2019 which ended up with the score at Blackpool 2-2 Wycombe Wanderers. The referee was Martin Coy.

Team Focus:
Blackpool

Formed: 1887
Nickname: The Seasiders
Stadium: Bloomfield Road Stadium (17,338)
Captain: Jay Spearing
Chairman: Simon Sadler
Manager: Simon Grayson
Competitions: League One position 8, EFL Trophy (Group G - North)

Taking a look at their past results, Blackpool:

- have not lost a league tie with Wycombe Wanderers in their previous 11 games. Quite a long unbeaten run against them.

- haven't won against Wycombe Wanderers in their last 4 league games.

Key Player: Sullay Kaikai

Typically deployed in the Left Wing position, Sullay Kaikai was born in Southwark, England. After having made a senior debut playing for Crawley Town in the 2013 - 2014 season, the goalscoring Forward has struck 3 league goals in the League One 2019 - 2020 campaign so far in a total of 10 appearances.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY:

The first competitive meeting between the two sides took place at Bloomfield Road on Saturday 26th November 1994 but the two sides did meet in a friendly match some 83 years earlier.

The match took place on Wycombe Fair Day, Monday 25th September 1911 when Blackpool, then in the second tier of English football (The Second Division), travelled to Loakes Park for a friendly. The visit of the Lancashire side to High Wycombe, saw great interest and attracted a gate that produced receipts of £34 for an estimated gate of at least 2,000.

Blackpool, taking on a Wanderers side competing in the Great Western Suburban League, always looked the stronger side. Clark, Connor, Quinn and Milne had all gone close for The Seasiders before Clark opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Quinn then missed an open goal before Copus, in the Wycombe goal, made saves from Wolstenholme and Connor. Wanderers had their better chances with Joey Goodchild unable to finish and Billy O’Gorman firing over.

In the second half Wolstenholme missed an easy chance before a pass from Quinn set up Clark to make the score 2-0 to the visitors. Milne added third with the best goal of the game. Wanderers went closest when O’Gorman hit the post but it was Copus who had to be in fine form to keep the final score to Wycombe 0 Blackpool 3.

Line-ups:

Wycombe: A.Copus, G.Reynolds, G.Holland, H.Bates, A.Bass, N.Rolfe, E.Pheby, W.O’Gorman, E.J.Goodchild, F.Adams, G.Payne

Blackpool: Fiske, Crewdson, Gladwin, Thorpe, Connor, Evans, Morley, Wolstenholme, Mime, Clark, Quinn

24-y/o returns: The Blackpool XI we expect Grayson to field against Wycombe on Tuesday

Blackpool are set to face a daunting task on Tuesday night, when they host high-flying Wycombe Wanderers at Bloomfield Road.

Following their 1-0 win over Sunderland at the weekend, Wycombe go into the game still second in League One, two points clear of the play-off places.

For their part, Blackpool are currently eighth in the third tier standings, with a run of just two wins in their last ten league games seeing them drop out of the top six places in recent weeks.

The Tangerines will be desperate to turn that around as quickly as possible, although that will not be easy in midweek, owing to Wycombe’s own recent form.

Here, we’ve taken a look at the starting XI Blackpool manager Simon Grayson could name in order to give his side the best possible chance of taking three points against one the division’s early pacesetters.

Having experimented with a number of formations already this season, we’ve gone for Grayson to use a 4-3-3 system on Tuesday night.

Despite some shaky moments already this campaign, Jak Alnwick has been an ever-present between the posts in the league this season, so he should continue in goal in midweek.

Likewise ahead of him, the quartet of Ollie Turton, Ben Heneghan, Curtis Tilt and James Husband look to have established a recently solid back four in recent weeks, so we imagine the defence could be relatively unchanged on Tuesday.

Further forward however, it does seem there could be propensity to change.

In midfield, Jordan Thompson is once again available after missing Blackpool’s last league game — a 2-1 defeat at home to Rotherham on the 12th October — having been on international duty with Northern Ireland.

He could return in the centre of the park alongside captain Jay Spearing and Liam Feeney, who have been regulars in the league starting XI this season, and could pose a threat to Wycombe with his pace and delivery.

Ahead of them, Nathan Delfouneso made his return from injury as a substitute in the defeat to Rotherham, before starting the EFL Trophy game at Carlisle the following Tuesday, while Grayson has revealed he is hopeful that Sullay Kaikai will be available to return to the fold after missing the last five games in all competitions with his own injury issues.

That would be another big boost for Blackpool, who ought to once again be led by up top by Armand Gnanduillet, who will be aiming to add to his club-high seven goals in all competitions this season.

Blackpool will be looking to inflict only Wycombe Wanderers’ second defeat of the season when they take on the Chairboys at Bloomfield Road tomorrow night.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side are the league’s surprise package so far, sitting in second place in League One after 13 games.

The Adams Park outfit reduced the gap to leaders Ipswich Town to one point at the weekend after overcoming Sunderland 1-0 on home turf, while the Tractor Boys fell to defeat at Accrington Stanley.

The only defeat Wycombe have suffered in League One so far this season came in a 2-0 reversal at Gillingham last month.

While Wycombe have only been beaten once away from home this season, they've also only claimed one win in their five away trips.

The last five meetings between the two sides have ended in draws, although one came in the EFL Trophy which Wycombe won on a penalty shootout.

Prior to those draws, the Seasiders had enjoyed a seven-game unbeaten run - going back to 1999 - in a streak that included six wins.

The last time Wycombe beat Blackpool in a league encounter was back in September 1999, when the Chairboys overcame the Seasiders 2-1 at Bloomfield Road.

Pool drew 0-0 at Adams Park on the opening day of last season, a game which turned out to be Gary Bowyer’s final match in charge.

The two sides played out another draw at Bloomfield Road in January, Harry Pritchard scoring a late equaliser to earn Pool a 2-2 draw after Ben Heneghan had earlier scored for the Seasiders.

Wycombe’s success this season hasn’t gone unnoticed, with their manager being constantly linked to vacant jobs.

But Ainsworth remains in charge at Adams Park despite speculation linking him with former side Lincoln City, Sunderland and Millwall in recent weeks.

The Wycombe fans have received an initial allocation of 300 tickets, with more available on request.

Gareth Ainsworth says tomorrow night's game against Blackpool holds no fear for his high-flying Wycombe Wanderers side.

The Chairboys are the league's surprise package so far, sitting in second place after 13 games, just one point adrift of leaders Ipswich Town.

Fresh from inflicting a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland at Adams Park on the weekend, Ainsworth says the Chairboys can approach Tuesday's game with plenty of confidence.

He said: "Sunderland, Blackpool and Rotherham in one week? Three draws would have been decent from that run of fixtures.

"But we've already got the equivalent of three draws, so we can really go at these games without too much fear.

"I think we travel well, in fact I know that, and the new people coming in has allowed us to have an overnight stay in Blackpool. That probably would have been a day-trip a couple of years ago.

"That gives us more preparation which will be key as we'll stay at Rotherham on the Friday as well.

"But I don't think it does any harm to have these boys go away together, it just builds that bond we've already got.

"I thought we probably deserved more than the one goal against Sunderland but I'll take a 1-0 any day of the week.

"I'm pleased, I'm proud, but we will be ready to go again on Tuesday."

Blackpool are nearing full strength for tomorrow's night League One clash against high-flying Wycombe Wanderers.

That's according to Pool boss Simon Grayson, who is hoping to have both Sullay Kaikai (hamstring) and Joe Nuttall (sciatica) back available for selection.

The duo have missed the Seasiders' last three games in league and cup, a run that resulted in two defeats and one draw.

The only player to be ruled out at this stage is striker Ryan Hardie, who suffered a knock to his thigh in last week's EFL Trophy defeat at Carlisle United.

Speaking this afternoon, Grayson said: “We’ve got some good work into the players and the time off has also given us an opportunity to get one or two more up to speed and back into the fold.

“It came at a good time for us and the situation is improving.

“Nathan Delfouneso was involved against Carlisle and Joe Nuttall and Sullay Kaikai have been out on the grass with us for the last few days.

“We will assess them if they will be alright for Tuesday night.

“Jordan Thompson is also back from international duty, as is Rocky Bushiri, so if everyone is available we’re in good shape.

“You want good players available and our 18 and behind the 18 will be a lot stronger than it has been for the last few weeks.

“The only one that will miss out is Ryan Hardie, who picked up a knock and a dead leg at Carlisle on Tuesday which has kept him out of training since then."

Nuttall's form had been up and down during the six consecutive games he started for the Seasiders prior to his injury.

Explaining his absence, Grayson told The Gazette: "It's been his sciatic nerve, which has been hard to pin down the reasoning behind it and how we solve it.

“That’s frustrating for him because we want him to get up to speed and show us what he can do, because he hasn’t had that run of opportunities.

“He had two or three games then he had a slight Achilles problem and then he’s had this sciatic nerve as well.

“Hopefully Joe can get his injuries out of the way and show the potential he’s got and prove why we brought him to the football club.”

Simon Grayson says Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth deserves all the attention he is currently getting.

The 46-year-old has been linked with a host of vacant manager’s roles in recent weeks, namely Sunderland, Millwall and Lincoln City.

The interest comes as no surprise to Grayson, who has been left impressed with the work Ainsworth has done during his seven-year tenure at Adams Park.

Wycombe, who make the trip to Bloomfield Road tonight, currently sit second in League One having only been beaten once all season.

“We have to make sure we do whatever is required to go and win the football match,” Grayson said ahead of tomorrow night's game.

“People can’t just be turning up and expecting us to beat Wycombe.

“If Wycombe were third from bottom you might think it’s a given, but Wycombe are second and beat Sunderland quite comfortably at the weekend even though it was only 1-0.

“They are there for a reason, without a shadow of a doubt.

“They’ve had some fantastic results and they have a spirit in abundance which means their players will run into the ground.

“They’ve got a certain style but they know what they’re going to do.

“Gareth is getting every last bit out of them and they are effective in what they do.

“They’ve got some real major threats and they’re second in the division for a reason because they’re winning football matches and asking a lot of questions of opposition teams.

“When you get some good results and your second in any division, you’re going to have people admiring what you’re doing.

“I think Gareth has done a fantastic job over a number of years at Wycombe, to get the promotion and then to stay in League One.

“I have a huge amount of respect for Gareth for what he’s done as a manager.

“But we’ve got to make sure we match everything they throw at us and more after that, because when you don’t match the opposition you will come out second best.”

The Seasiders are nearing full strength ahead of Tuesday's clash, with striker Ryan Hardie the only player definitely ruled out through injury.

Sullay Kaikai (hamstring) and Joe Nuttall (sciatica) could come back into contention after missing Pool’s last three games, while Rocky Bushiri and Jordan Thompson return from international duty.

The Big Preview: Wycombe Wanderers (H)

Seasiders Return To Action With Game Against Chairboys

A 10-day break from league action ends tonight when Blackpool host high-flying Wycombe Wanderers in Sky Bet League One.

The Seasiders have waited patiently to bounce back from recent results and will be determined to get on track again with a big three points.

To do that, the team must overcome a Wycombe side that currently sits second in the division and recorded a 1-0 victory at home to Sunderland on the weekend.

Team News:

The treatment table is now starting to clear up for Blackpool, who hope to welcome Sullay Kaikai and Joe Nuttall back into the fold. Jordan Thompson and Rocky Bushiri are also available again following international commitments. Ryan Hardie will be assessed though, having been forced off in the Leasing.com Trophy fixture at Carlisle United.

The visitors are set to welcome Nnambi Ofoborh and Curtis Thompson back from suspension, though may opt to name an unchanged side.

Previous Meeting:

The two teams played out a 2-2 draw when last at Bloomfield Road, with the previous game at Adams Park ending in stalemate.

In fact, there has been nothing to separate the sides in the last five meetings.

The Referee:

Ben Toner will officiate tonight's match at Bloomfield Road. This will be the first time he has refereed a game involving the Seasiders.

The Big Match Preview: Blackpool vs Wycombe

All you need to know.

Wycombe Wanderers continue its love affair with the M6 motorway, embarking north on the long expanse of road for the first of three such occasions in the next month, looking to continue their unbeaten league record away from home in midweek fixtures which currently spans almost two years.

Gareth Ainsworth's men make the most of the team-bonding opportunities provided by long overnight stays and have tended to fare well on the pitch too, collecting 14 points from eight unbeaten matches since they went down 1-0 at Accrington in November 2017.

The Chairboys boss indicated that a return of three draws from successive fixtures this week against Sunderland, Blackpool and Rotherham might have be considered an admirable achievement, but his side racked up three points at the first time of asking against the Black Cats at the weekend, and will now hope to build on momentum against Simon Grayson's Tangerines, who've had a 10-day break from league action.

They've won only two of their last 10 league matches after making a flying start with three straight wins, but possess a strong squad with eye-catching attacking options which could provide one of the sterner challenges of Wycombe's season so far. The last five meetings between the sides have all ended in draws.

Curtis Thompson and Nnamdi Ofoborh have returned from suspension and are available again, while Fred Onyedinma and Paul Smyth are nearing a comeback and could be in contention.

Blackpool have a virtually fully-fit squad to call upon, though Ryan Hardie is expected to be out.

Facilities for away fans
The ground capacity is 17,338 (all seated). I have heard that visiting fans are now accommodated once again on one side of the 'temporary' East Stand on one side of the pitch, where up to 2,500 supporters can be accommodated. Although the stand is covered there are several supporting pillars running along the front of the stand that could hinder your view. The facilities for visiting supporters, food & drink outlets, toilets etc. are housed in the more permanent Armfield Stand, at the south end. Fans access these by walking along the front of the East Stand and through the access tunnel into the back of the Armfield Stand. Entrance to the away section is from Bloomfield Road. The 60-page Matchday Programme costing £3 is available in and around Bloomfield Road.

Time on your hands?
A popular hostelry with away fans is the “Old Bridge House” on Lytham Road. This is just a short walk away - go down Bloomfield Road towards the seafront, turn right into Lytham Road and the pub is on the right. A little further along Lytham Road on the corner with the seafront is the “Manchester Bar” which welcomes away fans. Also on Lytham Road, but this time going in the direction of the Pleasure Beach, is the “Albert Pub” that normally has a good mix of home and away fans.
