Cheltenham Festival
at 15:00 11 Mar 2015

Messrs Mullins and Walsh had a wonderful day yesterday, and it could have been even better had not Annie Power fallen at the last when cruising to victory in the 4:00. I always thought that horses only fell over hurdles if they were duffers, had a duff jockey or were hampered. Annie Power is a class act, Ruby Walsh is the most successful jockey ever at the Cheltenham festival according to Channel 4, and the horse was clear in front. In the paper this morning it said that bookies would have lost £100 million had Annie Power won.

Hmmm.

Willie Mullins trained the winner of the second race today, Ruby's had a third and two also rans in the first three races so not quite as strong as day 1.

Paul Nichols trained the 9-1 winner of the third race today and has Dodging Bullets (who beat Sprinter Sacre last time out) in the big race coming up. Would be a brilliant double for him, but Sprinter Sacre looks a different beast that came in second at Ascot, could well be back to his best.

Hereford FC

A new club has been created and has managed to win a lease on Edgar Street for five years so can apply to join a league from next season, starting from the bottom. Not sure what the bottom will mean for them, perhaps the North Gloucestershire League (which is level 14 in the pyramid) offers the quickest route back up to whatever their natural level is.

Good luck to them and their supporters, who were screwed by a succession of owners whose interest seemed to be anything but football.

Rabs

He made his debut for Crewe on Saturday, coming on as a sub. Managed to score an OG.

Feel a bit sorry for the guy, he clearly had something at one point in his career, but the loss of confidence - spurred on by his horrendous night against us at Elland Road - seems to have stopped him from delivering. Crewe is his 17th club (and you're only allowed 13 in the bag).

'Arry's gone

Had to resign because of the need for an imminent knee operation would prevent him from doing his job.

Yeah Harry, right.

Without resort to the cheque book Mr. Redknapp has had to rely on his skills as a coach and motivator this season. Result? 19 points from 12 home games and 0 points from 11 away games and 21st in the league.

I'll admit here that I never liked Mr. Redknapp as a player or as a coach, but I hope he recovers quickly from his operation and has a long and healthy retirement from the game. The downside is he'll probably be snapped up as an analyst by some broadcaster (hopefully not a free terrestrial one) so will be spouting rubbish on TV for some years to come.

Come on you Royals
at 11:09 13 Oct 2014

Many moons ago when I worked in the US of A I was initially based about 20 miles from Kansas City and used to watch the baseball at the Kauffman stadium. The Royals were no great shakes then and never had been, but I was used to watching lower league football and understood what their fans were perpetually going through. I even wrote a piece about it on the old AVFTT.

I've followed them ever since and lo and behold if they didn't make the American League play-offs this season, the first time since the 1980s. Not unlike our fairy tale 2010/11. And now they've won the first 2 games of the AL play-offs. Ironically this is against the Orioles, as Baltimore was the second place I worked. That was in the days of 'iron-man' Cal Ripken who played 2,632 consecutive games - a record that will surely never be broken (although they said that of Lou Gehrig's previous record of 2,130).

Anyway, back to business in Baltimore tonight for the Royals and in a couple of days they might have booked their place in the World Series (n.b. so named because the first sponsor was the New York World newspaper, not because it purports to be any kind of world championship - although let's face it in effect it is). In the absence of football for a fortnight this has been a very pleasant distraction.

According to the BBC
at 14:48 1 Sep 2014

"The Blackpool Gazette reports that the club is in talks over three possible signings ahead of tonight's 23:00 BST deadline, with the newspaper adding that a cash bid has been made for a Championship midfielder, as well as an overseas striker."

Don't shoot, I'm just the messenger.

Ignore the vaguaries of the translation engine. He seems a very genuine guy, with a heart for the community. I've added my name to the petition he's promoting.

Lancs v Durham

Why did Durham choose to bat at Old Trafford on an overcast day? They're getting what they deserve for Collingwood's ridiculous decision. That nice Mr. Cook made the right decision in Kennington.

Squad better than expected

Obviously not all the signings have been publicised. Anybody else clicked the squad tab? I'm off down the bookies before the promotion odds get slashed.
