A new start with the arrival of Wayne Brown, albeit on a temporary basis and with baggage that unfortunately has been raked over the coals in the past two days which has deflected attention from the playing squad.
Let us set that aside and concentrate on the issue, that of survival. Now all the modelling of what might be, and form tables is meaningless, it is solely down to what Colchester achieves over the final 17 games. Realistically we need 20 more points to survive for another season. What a sad indictment on what has been the most wretched of seasons.
Forget about the humiliation against Marine and the performance at Exeter, the game that really hurt was the embarrassment against Southend, when we were simply appalling.

Now Wayne Brown is starting with a clean slate and looking to bring some players back into the squad that SB had either fallen out with or ignored.

Paris Cowan-Hall has not been given a chance, yes injury has been his nemesis but that is equally true of Harry Pell.
What Brown will be looking for is a degree of continuity, we have played different formations, different teams and SB had his favourites much to my chagrin.
The press unhelpfully are already talking about a permanent replacement but let us give Brown the opportunity to initially get that first victory and then to build over the remaining games to get those 20 points.

A day to get behind the team, a day to forget about the recent troubles and a day to be optimistic and look to the future.

The positivity lasted a long time then! Brown’s had literally a few days to work with the squad and pick a team for today’s match. He was always going to be influenced by Mullins and those around him that should know the players better than he does. Plus did anyone realistically expect us to get something out of today’s game? Forest Green are one of the best teams in this division and there was always going to be a reaction after losing to Southend. |  |

FGR’s third goal recorded as an own goal on every report I’ve read except that on the OWS, which attributes it to a Rovers player. Perhaps not being able to see what’s happening on the pitch in front of them is something club management should address as a matter of urgency. |  |

Yep, I get why the rampant pessimism, but let’s at least give Wayne Brown a chance to fix everything that is clearly wrong. I’m confident that if anyone can give our players the kick up the backside that most clearly need, he can, but that’s not going to happen overnight. There were green shoots yesterday for me. Definitely more urgency in the U’s from kick-off that’s for sure. The ease with which FGR sliced through us was very disturbing, even if they’re one of the best teams in this division. Our passing game definitely improved second half, but in reality only because FGR sat back after the red card and allowed us two thirds of the pitch. It was the complete lack of penetration in the final third that was most concerning. Looks like Gerken might be proper crocked, there was something clearly wrong with his kicking first half, that’s for sure.
