I was still in short trousers, and I’m ashamed to say that I was there wearing a Dirty Leeds rosette, much to the disgust of my dad who’d followed the U’s since the war. I still wear the hair shirt.

I think dad finally forgave me when I took him the Wembley a couple of times before he passed away.

My wife and I were there at the clock end. My wife being 5'2" saw nothing of the game but the atmosphere was unbelievable. We rushed home to watch telly to convince ourselves of what we had seen really happened.

I was then a Villa fan, as this was long before my arrival in Essex and my undergoing conversion therapy in the Victorian Inn.

My wife is an inch taller than Gerry’s and accompanied me on my first four visits to Terrace Four, Layer Road. She then asked to be excused further attendance as “she hadn’t seen a ball kicked in 360+ minutes” and “her only pleasure was a cup of Bovril and my company at half time”.

She now buys me an annual season ticket on my Birthday to ensure I’m not interfering with her Saturday afternoon pleasures, which often involve Prosecco (and cake) along with her buddies.

Can't help think that Proscecco and cake is a definite alternative to an afternoon at Barrow!
