Both Eom and Ronald try the same shot nearly every time. Eom looks to cut onto his right foot and bend it into the far corner. Ronald shoots low and hard across the keeper.

I’ll stick up for them when they aren’t getting credit for the overall job they do, Ronald in particular, but they both need to vary their shots a bit

Nobody doubts it maybe, but nobody gives him credit for it either. I can understand why he gets criticism for his shooting and his final ball. Criticism and praise should both be given when merited.

Key has gone very much off the boil this season. The player we’ve had the last two seasons is definitely up to it. This season, he hasn’t been. With hindsight, I’m sure we would have signed a RB in the summer

Now we’re back to the Ronald thing. He covers Galbraith multiple times every game by slotting in at right back every time Galbraith moves into midfield. It’s the side of the job not every winger would do and he doesn’t really get credit for.

As for Galbraith himself, he’s quite similar to Grimes in the way he plays. Comfortable on the ball, neat and technical. He does have more inertia drifting past players in midfield, but I’m not sure he’s the kind of dynamic dribbler who is going to burst past players into the box.

We haven’t got the type of player to drive at and beat defenders on the edge of the box. The best ones are quick and aggressive with good ball control.

Widdell is probably the closest we’ve got to that. Maybe Walta will be the one.

I agree with what you’re saying and Matos will undoubtedly be looking to do something about it.

Can diehards going pne game buy a ticket for derby v Bristol C?

I think we need to look at the bigger picture here. If he’s putting a couple of thousand on a Tuesday night gate, what impact if he having on our popularity globally?

Whether people like his music, think he’s a bad role model or would buy his hoodies is totally irrelevant.

In a PSR world, our owners can’t just lump money at the club. Getting global superstars on board enhances our profile which leads to increased spending in merchandise, match tickets etc and far better advertising deals.

Or would people prefer us to be sponsored by M and P cycles with no one outside the UK knowing who we are again?

Yes, I know.

On his day he was superb. He had about four of them in the Premier League.

He was more consistently effective when we got relegated because he was just levels above most championship fullbacks.

He left his fullback exposed every single game. Not everyone notices that and it doesn’t matter on the odd occasion he roasted the fullback like the Arsenal and Chelsea games. What would tend to happen is our fullback would be left exposed to a 2v1 and would then get the blame for opponents passing their way past him.

That type of winger is great if you’ve got a prime Naughton or even Tate behind him. Where we are now with Galbraith, a midfielder who drops into midfield regularly or Key who isn’t at his best and likes to bomb on anyway, we need a winger who protects them.

Ronald isn’t ideal. I’d prefer a Routledge or Dyer type. He’s just the most suited to it we have at the moment.

This is absolutely true. He gets into great positions multiple times most games, but very rarely capitalises on it. Certainly frustrating.

However, with any of our right backs at the moment, he’s a better bet than the type of winger who gets bums off seats, but doesn’t do the dirty work. Off the top of my head, Montero, Oko-Flex and possibly Inoussa would be in that category.

Matos can see it. He’s not picking Ronald purely on his attacking

You need a certain level of perception to pick up what’s going on off the ball whether you’re at the game or not.

Plenty of people at the game won’t notice the graft Ronald puts in or his positional awareness covering his fullback. All they’ll see is him shifting it onto his right foot and shooting low and hard at the opposite corner.

I’ll admit he tries the same shot nearly every time and it rarely works.

If you haven’t got that perception, you’ll get just as much, probably more, from watching a stream.

Oh come on. Saying he’s out of form isn’t hating. The Josh Key of the last couple of seasons would be one of the first names on my team sheet.

You’re right, we haven’t conceded with him on the pitch in 2026, unless you count the goal West Brom scored and don’t factor in he’s played 122 minutes, one was a start where he came off at half time and of the four others, he came on for Ronald with a full back behind him in three of them.

If he was at his best, which is very, very good IMO, we wouldn’t be taking our best player out of midfield to cover right back.

I hope he gets there soon, because on form, he’s a better RB than Galbraith and our midfield would be better with Galbraith in it

The ‘off the ball’ part is going to be way beyond one or two. Sensible post though

A number did, but a number would consistently blame him when the likes of Montero did next to no defensive work and left him exposed.

Our right back options are Galbraith who isn’t a right back, Key who is out of form and Ward who is coming towards the end of his career. Whichever one we play there needs a winger who can protect him out. I can see why Ronald frustrates, but I can also see why he starts every game.

The people who don’t understand this are generally the people who used to slaughter Naughton every time he got left two on one by our more maverick wingers

Swansea City : The reality from that Derby performance
at 11:06 17 Feb 2026

I’d go further than that.

They are a set piece team, we aren’t. They negated our pressing by just launching down the left channel to Abyemang. They kept in shape so we couldn’t really attack them in broken play and held us at arms length so we didn’t create real chances and most of our shots were from distance or angles.

If ever we’re involved in ‘very much a set piece game’ it’s because the opposing manager has got one over on Matos. Eustace made us play the game he wanted it to be.

Doesn’t happen often, but it happened Saturday.

That’s the point really. We allowed Derby to impose their game on us and dictate the way we played.

That was far more of a frustration for me than the actual result.

We don’t need to weaken the team just to accommodate local players. Yes you need water carriers, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get the best water carriers available.

We all love a local player and if they are good enough they will play. If they aren’t, they shouldn’t get in the side on the strength of their birth certificate.

Where did you get Bobby Wales being ‘difficult’ from?

From the people I know (who are admittedly hit and miss but do have a little bit of insight) that couldn’t be further from the truth.

There is plenty to be positive about.

The manner of Saturdays defeat, more than the defeat itself, was a bit of a kick in the guts, because I think a lot of us felt we’ve moved on from performances like that.

I’m pretty confident we’ll be back to our usual standards this weekend. Beat Bristol City, particularly if we play the football we’re capable of, and Derby will just be written off as a blip.

We are building under Matos, the football is better and the results are better. We will have the odd game like that and when it happens, it will feel worse than when it was happening every week and we half expected it.

Completely agree. Need to score first against teams like that and force them out of their shape. We didn’t seem to have a plan to break them down and no one wanted to take the initiative to run at defenders.

Once we start shooting from long range, you know we’ve run out of ideas.

This is what I thought. Second goal, Stamenic didn’t even attempt to make it difficult for him. He basically ducked and allowed Agyemang a free header. Not sure that Burgess is at fault there.

First one arguably, but it’s a near post flick on that changes the trajectory and Brewster just reacts quickly.

Goals like the first happen, the second was avoidable, or at least shouldn’t have been so easy. I’m more annoyed we didn’t lay a glove on them at the other end.
