Yeah I know. Wasn’t commenting on why he wasn’t on the list. Was saying I expect he’ll go to a club who pay higher wages

I thought Placheta could have been good, but no idea what kind of money he’d want. Can’t really argue with the Walsh one, as talented as he is.

Assuming Lowe will be offered more elsewhere.

Joe Allen Signs For Another Year ...
at 17:39 17 May 2024

He’s often the best player on either side for the time he’s on the pitch. If we can get an hour out of him most games he’ll more than justify another season.

Naughton

Naughton is positionally sound, can spot a long ball to put Ronald away and very rarely bombs forward. Ronald doesn’t really need to protect him and can pretty much just play to his own strengths and attack.

Key has much more attacking instinct and would probably suit a more Routledge type winger who will look for his overlapping runs and drop in to cover him defensively.

Having said that, with everyone fit, you have to play Key and Ronald. They were starting to gain an attacking understanding towards the end of the season with Ronald playing Key into great positions a few times. His season was pretty stop start and Naughton is good cover when he’s injured.

He was one of our best players between coming in for Key and getting injured himself.

Won’t start many, but won’t let us down when he comes on or covers injuries.

Yes Tymon definitely.

The rest of it is a decent argument for loans.Humphreys didn’t live up to his billing for me, but did a decent job. I’d have a player like that competing with Wood and Darling.

I think we need to buy someone for central midfield unless Abdullai is ready.

I’m sure we’ll sign a marquee striker. Whether we buy two after last summer I don’t know.

Agree with you completely there. Whether it’s loans or permanent signings, we probably don’t have a lot of leeway to get things wrong. Last season was very poor recruitment wise all round. Obviously there were a few bright spots - Rushworth, Key, Ronald..

I’d guess that most teams in the championship are only one great summer away from the playoffs and one disastrous one from a relegation battle.

It only really stifles the progress of those that aren’t good enough/ready for the first team. Abdullai, Parker and Govea have all had chances this season. If it wasn’t for injuries, the first two likely would have played more. Lissah seems to be on the verge.

I know what you mean. Whatever we paid for Ashby as an example was a waste, but he was just a bad signing. It pales into insignificance compared to spending the best part of £5m plus wages on the two strikers. I said Yates was more of a headache than Sagoe Jr the other week and this is exactly what I meant.

Your last paragraph is bang on, but applies to permanent signings just as much, if not more so.

It was just a bad batch of loans. If you’re bringing in better, but inexperienced, players from Premier League sides and allowing our own youngsters not yet ready for the first team to go out on loan, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Patino, Ashby and Humphreys all came with big reputations and failed to live up to them. If they don’t actually improve the first team, then I agree it’s pointless.

We didn’t ’need’ Borini. We could have played Dobbie there and started Pratley. I’m not sure if we’d have gone up though. We got to the playoffs twice under Cooper with our best players (apart from Ayew the second season) being on loan. Nobody questioned the process then.

Last season was particularly poor with only Rushworth really justifying it. They have to be better than we’ve already got. I’m sure the club thought the three I’ve mentioned would be. They were generally poor under Martin too. We just have to get better at bringing the right players in.

Swansea City : The confusing decision making for a whole season
at 21:07 6 May 2024

Do you honestly think the centre backs splitting to the point they are both close to the touchline and the fullbacks pushing that far forward isn’t exactly what he’s instructed them to do?

Grimes, who is a far better ball carrier and distributer than any of our centre backs, dropping between the centre backs is part of that.

Watch him when he’s playing alongside Allen, who demands the ball and makes runs, which either put him in a position for a more constructive pass or draws markers away from other players. Compare that to how he looks when he plays alongside Fulton (or Patino Saturday) who doesn’t.

He’s far more forward thinking and instinctive when he’s got options ahead of him.

Yes, he does nearly always play safe, because as frustrating as it is, it’s better than a 50/50 ball.

The last paragraph - that’s clearly the instructions Gtimes and the two centre backs are given. They split, the fullbacks push on and Grimes drops into the middle. If you think they should be more central, Grimes should be further forward and the fullbacks further back, fair enough but that’s a Williams thing not a Grimes thing.

It is coached. It’s to provide defensive cover if we get turned over with our fullbacks high up the pitch.

The Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
at 17:12 5 May 2024

The games we were getting an hour out of him were the games we noticeably dropped off after an hour. Before that, when he was coming on for the last half hour, people were asking ‘why don’t we play like that in the first half’

Could be a disaster if he’s constantly unavailable, but if we can get an hour out of him most games, it’s well worth it.

The passing backwards and sideways is more often down to the player receiving than ball, or the player that doesn’t make a run into space that enables the more progressive pass, than the player actually passing it. Not Grimes specific. Applies to anyone in that role.

As Richard says, the more our fullbacks are asked to push up, the further back Grimes sits. He almost always looks better with Allen in the team when he’s got more freedom and a teammate always looking to give him a decent passing option.

Those are separate things. I was never concerned about relegation.

But I agree with you. I haven’t enjoyed this season. We’ve had too many games like yesterday. Huffing and puffing while organised opponents nullify us effectively.

Staying up doesn’t make it an acceptable season.

I do enjoy watching us when teams attack us like Norwich did, but we’re easy to set up against and stifle.

I’m also a bit concerned about this summer. I don’t know what kind of funds are available and if we spend them as badly as we did last year we could be in trouble.

Swansea City v Millwall : Match day thread
at 14:55 5 May 2024

Yes absolutely. If Cullen, or Yates for that matter, is a lone centre forward, he is a practically impossible target from a cross. Odds increase slightly if it’s whipped in low to attack the near post, but still very much unlikely. There is the odd anomaly where the defenders don’t pick him up like Cardiff at home.

You would think we’d at least have Paterson or Cooper or the opposite winger arriving at the edge of the box to make a cutback an option.

Ronald occasionally tries to drive at goal, Govea has done the same in his cameos and the fullbacks do look to overlap them or burst through inside the winger to be played in. We look far more threatening doing this than crossing in for strikers who aren’t going to get on the end of them.

The position was important at the time some people were worried about relegation because there were five or six teams between us and the bottom three and we were running out of games. One or two of the bottom clubs going on a run and overtaking us was feasible. All of them doing it really wasn’t. My posts throughout said the same.

If we play like we have on general since Williams was appointed, we’ll stay up again. That’s a really low bar to set though and I agree the performances aren’t great to watch, particularly at home against teams who come to stifle us.

Happy? No I won’t be. I’m not happy now. There’s a difference between being extremely confident we’d stay up and being happy with either the league table or the performances.
