Swansea captain Garry Monk believes the club should go to the next level financially

Monk believes that the club is destined for the Premier League but thinks to get there the Swans should look to build on what they have at the moment rather than let some of their top stars leave in the summer.

Angel Rangel, Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez have all been linked with big money moves elsewhere and the current season is yet to finish and Monk told the Evening Post "I am not looking forward to the summer.

"I know I am going to be switching on the TV and seeing stories or hearing rumours about the lads moving on and it's going to be difficult if big clubs come in.

"I speak to the players obviously and nobody is desperate to leave or anything like that.

"But if the chance comes to play Premier League football and to earn five times as much as you are on now it can be difficult to turn down.

"I am not saying we should be trying to pay the sort of money that you get in the Premier League - that's not going to happen.

"But if the club can just go to the next step, then the players might think twice even if a big offer comes in.

"They might see that if they stay at Swansea we can get there and they will be rewarded a little bit later.

"Maybe I'm living in a bit of a dream world, but I just feel that we can achieve something really special if we keep the main players here.  We need to keep this squad together

"There is going to be a lot of interest and usually these things boil down to financial factors.   It's up to the club whether they accept or reject bids for players.  That's their decision.  But I think it's crucial we keep this squad together.

"Unfortunately money talks in this day and age.  But if we can go up to the next level in terms of wages across the squad, I think it just offers a little carrot.

"If one of the big boys comes in for Angel say it's going to be very difficult for the club and the player to say no.

"But if we can stay together and add one or two new faces here and there I believe we have a really good chance of going for promotion or even winning this league in the next couple of years.

"I'm not naive and I know the score but I think the lads can see with the brand of football we play we really can achieve something if we get the chance.

"The rewards will come to the players as well as the club in the end.  We have seen everyone in the Championship and we realise there is absolutely nothing to fear

"We know we can batter teams on our day and a bunch of lads who had not played at this level before this season now believe they can go even higher

"I speak to loads of opposition players and coming off the pitch they are all saying 'Wow you are a great team - we weren't expecting that'

"Birmingham was the prime example.  We lost the home game but should have won and their manager thought our performance might have been a one-off.

"Then we went up to their place and taught them a lesson and they then thought we were the real deal.  We had someone with stature, John Toshack, more or less writing us off at the start of the season.

"For him to come out and take that back was a big thing for us."
