Pompey frustrated at Stanley stalemate
Pompey frustrated at Stanley stalemate

Still unbeaten - but reflecting on a day when one point should have been three. That's Pompey's position after they were frustrated by Accrington Stanley in a 0-0 draw.

The Blues once again had plenty of possession, but they carved out few clear-cut chances, even after the introduction of Matt Tubbs and Conor Chaplin for the latter stages.

Stanley defended stoutly and adpted a physical appraoch that saw five of their players booked - Pompey picked up two yellows themselves - but many Fratton fans would have gone home thinking this was the standard of opposition their team should be capable of knocking over if they are to mount a serious promotion challenge.

They have another chance to get it right at home when Barnet visit next Saturday.

The best efforts of the first half for Pompey were a 50-yard shot by Michael Doyle that wasn't too far off target and a Jayden Stockley volley from a corner which was belted a little too high.

Acrrington didn't overly trouble Brian Murphy in the first half - in fact Paul Jones had more to do after the break after coming on as sub, presumably because Brian Murphy was injured.

Tubbs and Chaplin did breathe new life into the Pompey cause late on and both managed one shot on goal, but Chaplin's shot was blocked by a defender and then Tubbs' acrobatic effort from a cross was superbly saved by Jason Rooney on a good day for people with such surnames.

Pompey: Murphy (Jones 46); Davies, Burgess, Clarke, Stevens; Atangana, Doyle; Evans, Roberts, Bennett (Chaplin 66); Stockley (Tubbs 66). Subs not used: Webster, Haunstrup, Hollands, McGurk

Referee: Brendan Malone

Attendance: 15,745 (91 away fans)
