Dons v Pompey: Boss glad to 'put ring around' his squad

Kenny Jackett is glad Pompey's comings and goings are over - for now at least - so he can get on with directing his new-look squad to League One success.

The Blues had their busiest transfer deadline day to date with four players leaving and four coming in.

That led to a shake-up of the team for last weekend's home game against Rotherham and some felt all the changes contributed to Pompey's 1-0 defeat.

Jackett takes his team to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday and then to Northampton on Tuesday and hopes the new faces start to make their mark.

The manager told the Pompey website: 'There were a lot of changes on deadline day, with four players going out and four more coming in. We had an older team last season and I wanted to drop the age down a bit, but I also think we’ve got a capable squad.

'It’s quite nice to put a ring around it now. We are where we are and this group can concentrate on moving Pompey up the table.'

Jackett spoke about a couple of his new signings as he talked about how he wanted his team to create more chances.

Speaking about the Rotherheam defeat, he told The News: 'Matty Kennedy produced a lot of quality balls but we just didn’t get on the end of them. You need people in those areas to produce a high amount of assists and goals and he’s been working on set-pieces.

‘That’s what wingers get judged on. ‘Work-rate of the team is important but that should be a standard. After that, there has to be a production of goals and chances coming from that area and Kennedy gave us that.

‘Somehow you need work out a way of creating chances. ‘Oliver Hawkins gives us a complement to Brett Pitman and Chaplin, who have been the ones who have taken the eye.’
