Dons 0 Pompey 2: Jackett's men storm to win in thunder and lightning
Saturday, 9th Sep 2017 18:12 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey chalked up their first away win of the season as goals either side of the interval by Brett Pitman and Oliver Hawkins saw off AFC Wimbledon 2-0 ay Kingsmeadow.

It was a timely boost for Kenny Jackett and his players after four games without a win in the league and puts them in good heart for games at Northampton and at home to Wealdstone in the coming week.

Jackett brought in Damien McCrory on the left side of defence and Nathan Thompson and Matt Kennedy for the debuts after appearances from the bench against Rotherham.

There was little to choose between the sides for most of the first half, with ex-Fratton winger Andy Barcham firing one chance over for the Dons and Pitman denied an opening at the other end by an offside flag.

Adam May and Pitman again tried their luck but had no joy but Pompey took the lead seven minutes before the break when Pitman was fouled in the area by Barry Fuller and tucked away the penalty himself.

Poor Oliver Hawkins suffered an open wound for the second week in a row when he collided with Kennedy and he did not re-emerge for the second half - but the man who replaced him, Chaplin, was soon on the scoresheet.

The youngster was on it to in a flash - just like the half-time lightning - when Anthony Hartigan miscued a clearance and made no mistake to put Pompey two up.

Lyle Taylor and George Francomb both tested Luke McGee as the Sons looked for a comeback while Pompey had chances of their own for the game's third goal - Pitman and May both denied by keeper George Long.

Christian Burgess was unlucky to be booked for catching another ex-Blue, Paul Robinson, in the face when he tried an overhead kick. Robinson had to go off and the Wombles were down to ten having already used their subs.

That spelled the end of any hopes of a late Dons comeback and the points were Pompey's to move them up to 14th place. They visit 21st-placed Northampton on Tuesday night.

Pompey: McGee; Thompson, Burgess, Clarke, McCrory; May, O’Keefe; Lowe, Pitman, Kennedy (Bennett 67); Hawkins (Chaplin 46). Subs not used: Bass, Talbot, Close, Donohue, Naismith

Referee: Kevin Johnson

Attendance: 4,585 (786 Pompey fans)
