A calculated Pompey gamble - will it pay off?

It's a bit of gamble - but if you don't have the odd flutter you don't win the jackpot. That, more or less, is Pompey's thinking as they go ahead with this weekend's game against Gillingham at Fratton Park.
With Craig MacGillivray and Ross McCrorie away on international duty, and Ronan Curtis also having had a call-up but now having returned to Pompey after an injury setback, the Blues could have called off this weekend's game.
But already behind with fixtures after three other postponements this season, and eyeing the fact they have won their past two league games, Pompey are happy to get the game on - even if it is against a side who have got the better of them a few times in recent seasons.
Boss Kenny Jackett told the club website: 'I think it’s the right decision because we’ve had some big gaps between games at times this season. That builds up pressure and I didn’t want that to be the case – I think we can get going during October and November, but we need the fixtures for that.
'I have confidence in Alex Bass and you have to put young players in at some stage. You need to play them when the situation is right. I’ve been with him here for a couple of years and, like with all my players, I talk to him on a regular basis.
'We want to get into a flow if we can and produce a performance of industry and quality for our supporters.
'Momentum is a big thing – that’s true of all football and not just at Pompey – and Saturday is a big game for us. It’s one we’re all excited about but we won’t underestimate the opposition because you have to work hard for every point.
'We’ll certainly have to be at our best on Saturday and it’s an opportunity to keep taking our season forward. You look at the team you’re facing, but ultimately judge yourself by your own standards and how your side is progressing.'
