Pompey's longest-serving player admits: I’m always disappointed when I’m not starting

Ronan Curtis admits to being disappointed at his recent spell on the Pompey bench - but says any player happy to be a sub is in the wrong profession.

Josh Koroma has been favoured for the starting spot in Curtis' position on the left in most recent games, although the Irishman got the nod against Oxford on Tuesday - but later came off injured.

It remains to be seen who will be picked to start when Shrewsbury on Saturday -but Curtis says the important thing is the team is doing well - particularly in front of their own fans.

He told the Pompey website: 'It (this season) has not been the greatest for me so far, although there have still been a few goals and assists. The important thing is that the team is doing well, which we have been this season, and that we remain unbeaten at home.

'I’ve been in and out of the team and of course I want to play every game, but there’s still a long way to go. This is my fifth year at the club and I’ve made more than 200 appearances, am the longest serving player and the top scorer this century.

'I’m always disappointed when I’m not starting, but if a player doesn’t have a problem getting dropped, then he’s in the wrong job! You just have to deal with the consequences and when you do get that opportunity, be ready to bring it.'

Pompey have not lost a league game at home since January and Curtis said: 'We know how good Fratton is and what the fans bring in, while the players we’ve got are of a high calibre. That’s 18 games since we last lost here, but a few of them have been draws and we want to turn them into wins.

'We went on a really good run at the start of the season before losing at Ipswich — now it’s time for another one.'
