The Rochdale Connection 22:04 - Jul 1 with 6433 viewsfitzochris

While it’s true Rochdale AFC couldn’t be described as an elite football club, plenty of elite players have credited the Dale with launching their careers.

From broken toys who needed to be fixed, to rough diamonds in need of a polish, to academy products nurtured from the beginning, Rochdale AFC has propelled a proud number of players to the Premier League and international stage over the past twenty-five years.

In The Rochdale Connection, Chris Fitzgerald catches up with six of them to find out just how the club helped them and what, in their opinion, it takes to become an elite footballer.

There are stories from cultured centre half Alan Reeves, Rochdale’s own sons Craig Dawson and Matt Gilks, the prolific striker Rickie Lambert, as well as the fleet-footed Will Buckley and powerhouse Glenn Murray.

There are also reflections on the impact the club had on the careers of Paul Butler, Grant Holt, Adam Le Fondre and Paddy McCourt.

Thought you only got a sticky when listening to Kiss, or summat.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Got this last week and forgot to post. Buy it, really interesting read again.

Have you ever thought about taking requests for interviews on here? Maybe set a theme?

One idea could be to focus on a season -say the promotion campaign - and interview those involved. Their views on particular games and stories of what went on. Only chucking thoughts out there btw, feel free to ignore!

Saving it for my hols, but was thinking along a similar theme.

Would be good to interview those who's time at Dale was far from ideal, were slighty more controversial or played alongside Hilly to get a different perspective on things. Top of my head, I'm thinking Monington, Leonard, Russell, Connor, Adams etc

I'd read a Lord of the Rings sized edition of 'The Alex Russell Years".

I'm lost with this conversation now. Is it some sort of secret code?

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

If I do another book it would focus on the likes of Shaun Reid, Steve Whitehall, Alex Russell, Gary Jones etc. The cult heroes, if you like.

I say 'if' because these books are done in my spare time and this recent one has been quite demanding for all kinds of reasons (and it has sullied my image of one player I previously admired).

It's worth it when I get good feedback, though.
