Final day assessment 14:28 - May 3 with 2637 views | 442Dale | Looking at this game individually: God knows what the aim was with that initial selection. The centre of midfield contained a right back pretty much on his own with two wingers/forwards sort of supporting him. Rafferty did ok actually, apart from an unnecessary challenge which got a deserved yellow and a second one that was again the correct decision. The main problem was the lack of options for the central defenders who were constantly getting the ball off Lillis; it was pass, pass, pass with nothing on in front of them. Strangely the sending off improved things for a while as Allen came on and ran the show, leading most to wonder why we hadn't played him from the start. RNL and Henderson had a chance with a second of each other and we could have been leading. Then they got some corners and the goals started flying in. This might have been the most successful Dale side ever over the last two seasons but they're as poor as any I've seen at defending set pieces. Scowen was one of their smallest players but scored with ease, twice. As said initially this is a post about one game, and despite that 15 minutes in the second half when we were on top it was a very disappointing end to an impressive season. Dead rubber? The words should never be appropriate. [Post edited 3 May 2015 14:35]

He did quite well there but the formation and the players chosen alongside him didn't really make it a worthwhile experiment. Allen instead of Logan at least would have given us a 'natural' central midfielder to give Rafferty and everyone else more options.

Have to totally disagree about Raff, his 2 contribution to the game consisted of 2 yellow cards. God only knows why anyone would start him there with Jamie sat on the bench, and through no fault of his own Cannon was getting roasted down the right hand side without any help far too many times

Final day assessment on 16:55 - May 3 with 2052 views | RotherhamDale | Don't like the 5-3-2 formation. Don't understand why Raff played in midfield and not at right back. Jamie Allen looked a class above when he came on. Tanser was really poor. As was Logan. But then again it doesn't really matter. We've had a great season. A centre half, flying winger and a proper centre forward please Keith.
| Possession with progression. |

It was more a case of him doing quite well in an unfamiliar position with little assistance provided by the way we set up. But yeah, he's not aware enough to make a go of that role long term.

I'd say the 532 was an experiment worth trying with the game being fairly meaningless.

We've played the wing backs before though, it was the choices of personnel in midfield that were really debatable. Also what happens if we're in Doncaster's position next season with the last 5/6 games "meaningless"? We've usually been pretty effective making unique choices (Done at LB or CF, Kennedy at CH), but it should be because they're the best option for any particular game, not an experiment because the game might not have much riding on it.

He didn't experiment because the game was fairly meaningless though. He'll have done it because that is what he does. If Cannon becomes first choice rb next season then having Rafferty able to play defensive midfield would be a plus to the squad.

Maybe play him there with other regular midfielders to get a fairer assessment of his abilities then. His out balls today were all too often the centre halves. I didn't think the game was meaningless at all, it was a response to the previous post. I'm sure Rafferty was indeed used there for those reasons, but the other selections didn't give him as mch chance to excel. Still think he did ok though.

Final day assessment on 20:16 - May 3 with 1476 views | dale1968 | Today was diabolical. Yes we may have had a reasonable season but to get dicked 5-0 is embarrassing and I for one was expecting a performance today. A lot of work to do during the Summer if we want to compete at this level.
