My father was in an earlier intake than that - probably when it was in the Town Centre, mid-Forties. His overriding memory was of the head, Dr. Payne. Even the mention of his name made him shudder. This was in the days of school uniforms with caps - apparently a daily ritual was for all the boys to be outside at the start of the day, cap held aloft. Only when every boy had fallen into line would Dr Payne allow entrance. And woe betide the boy who forgot his cap.

Funny how the most feared teachers made the biggest and most long-lasting impression. Although in the Doctor's case, I think the impression was actually physical, meted out by cane or slipper.

Good evening Cobbler150

Which club were you referring to when you said that 'fraud of a club just up the road'? There are several around here I dislike, to varying degrees, so just wondered which of these had upset you, and why.

Cheers.

“Paul Walsh, a 56-year-old roofer, said he knew all about the controversy but he was still going to vote Labour anyway.”

I’m no expert, but how would this be possible?

So with his Pendle connections, and membership of Lancashire County Council, does he support PNE, Rovers or Burnley? I won't accept it would ever be Dale.

Certainly more use than commemorative Sunderland mugs. Even in the NW of England.

Perhaps less useful for drinking tea from, though.

"Anybody remember the days when we had a successful Goldbond at the club, how much cash did that generate every month towards the playing budget? Cash streams that are completely ignored while the club becomes more and more desperate."

Anyone remember which deplorable man decided he knew better, scrapped Goldbond and replaced it with a vastly inferior and more costly replacement?

Another baleful strand of that man's legacy.

A few names in that Leeds line-up went on to become well-known names:

David Harvey who was the main keeper between 1970 and the late 70s, and starred in the 1974 World Cup for Scotland;

Eddie Gray - the man who later went on to rescue us from the ignominy of relegation from the bottom division (imagine that);

Terry Hibbit who played for a few top line clubs;

Is 'M Bates' Mick Bates who played as a defender for Leeds for several seasons?

“Probably the worst decisions the club ever made.”

I’m not sure how it compares in ‘worstness’ against the decision to allow Bottomley within five miles of the place.

Never fully understood what RAFC did wrong in the 1980 re-election.

It was the other voting clubs who decided the outcome, and unless RAFC was responsible for the two no-shows, how could it be blamed?

It gained, certainly, by retaining League status, but surely any chairman in Ratcliffe' position would have done exactly the same - even Alty's chairman.

I do remember walking home from school on that day in 1980 with a mate holding his transistor radio to his ear, determined to break the news of RAFC's demise, and the general air of disbelief that it hadn't happened.

Typical bury arithmetic. A three letter word spelled out using only two. Genius.

Correct. The baleful legacy left by Bottomley, BBM, Bentley and others who thought relegation, from any division, acceptable.

Good luck lad. Give your best and you will be backed.

Not a complete solution by any means, but I can remember the days when the players warmed-up for an evening game by the light of a single floodlight. Not a single pylon - a single bulb.

That's my starter solution. There must be others. If we're not using it, we won't have to pay for it.

I do hate the way Rochdale keeps moving around on the map. It was a bad marriage that saw Campbell sign when Rochdale happened to be in the north.

Shouldn't happen.

Bazunu and Sanchez were both loan players.

Both were goalkeepers.

There the similarity ends.

We saw this kind of activity when relegated from L1.

People who contributed to our relegation suddenly decide they are better than that, and demand to be employed at the higher level.

If only this application and self-belief had been demonstrated in the 46 games that mattered.

Really not surprised by this, but another bad news event for Rochdale AFC.

Another nail firmly driven in here.

Aye well ..... I switched away from Sky to BT for broadband and telly, only to find, after I'd cancelled Sky, that BT had cancelled my order within seconds of me placing it, but without telling me.

I went back to Sky who reinstated my broadband within a few short days, then upgraded it at the 'new customer' rate, and the telly has been reorganised at a lower cost.

So even BT didn't come up to par for me I'm afraid. Doubtless other will have other experiences.

RMBC ... Parking restrictions on match days and nights around Spotland?
at 20:28 31 May 2023

I think it goes wider than just professional sport. Look at how a driver, unfamiliar with the town centre, might proceed. You can come off the M62 onto the A627(M), before hitting problems at the Sudden lights.

Whilst turning right gets you along a promising dual carriageway, don't even think of turning towards the Town Hall/Esplanade, because where do you go then? RMBC says 'welcome', but you're not really.
Most of the available parking has been given over to some strange concrete expanse. You can no longer drive through the square and up School Lane, because RMBC says you can't.

So back you go to the lights, and turn right up St Mary's Gate. You can turn right at the bottleneck into the Exchange, but the road layout suggests that RMBC would rather you didn't.

So go on to the next lights, to tun right down John Street. You need patience for this bit, as only about six cars can get through at any one time. RMBC would rather you didn't. If you then miss the car park, you go through the lights and another bottleneck into a series of single carriageway roads, all leading away from the town centre. It's baffling.

So instead head up the Yorkshire Street/Halifax Road, passing through another tortuous bottleneck to do so, because RMBC don't want traffic here you see.

Head on to Albert Royds / Kingsway and Queensway and you're back more or less where you began. And you've missed the town centre, despite trying to find it - just as RMBC want.

As a scheme for killing a town and deterring visitors (or even council tax-paying residents), RMBC is in a league of its own.

Sorry for mentioning 'league'.
