How old are you ? 12 or 13 ? I’m done with this childish trolling.

I’m not on about the one in the snow, that’s the full squad. This one was of the 11 players that played in the final. I’ll see if I can find it later.

339 appearances - that’s legend status.

I don’t mean that photo. There’s another team photo I’ve seen were it’s just the 11 that played on that night and they’re wearing the badge on their shirt. Hammerdale refers to it in a recent post.

Back when I started watching football back in the 1960’s most lower league teams had a few old heads that had been big time in their day. Didn’t Ted Burgin play for Leeds in the old Div 1 and was a reserve for the 1954 England World Cup team ? Stan Milburn was an England B international and Doug Winton played for Burnley and Villa at top level and was a Scotland B international.

Before my time England international John Haines had a spell at the Dale. Promotion rivals Brighton had England striker Bobby Smith a year after he played for England and Brentford had Scottish striker John Dick. All top class players in their day. Given the wages in football at the time players had to play on as long as they could. Nowadays players at top level are earning enough to retire when their time at top level is over. Ted and Stan would have been millionaires if they were playing today.

Maybe the book has it wrong. My fading memory tells me the team didn’t normally wear the badge on the shirt at that time.

In one of the books I have about the Dale there is a team photo . It says it was taken on the night of the first leg match and the team are wearing badges on the shirt.

I have this mental image of Laurie Calloway taking a penalty about that time. In my minds eye he actually put it over the bar and out of the ground at what was the Church Inn end ! Am I dreaming or did that actually happen ? Big Reg took pens later on.

That’s interesting reading that Ronnie Cairns took a pen. Stan Milburn would have been a regular penalty taker at that time.

Thanks for that, the physical side healed but the mental side of the game never healed. I was only an amateur, my livelihood didn’t depend on it. Think about what it is to be a pro and go through that experience. The same thing happened to Tony Buck. That’s why I cut players coming back from a serious injury a fair amount of slack.

I didn’t go to the final but a neighbour who did got me the programme. I swapped it with the rest of my programmes for a load of “ Charlie Buchan’s “ football monthly’s when I was laid up with a broken leg.

I could kick myself now.

I had both of those LP’s back in the day. I paid about 50p for them at the time. The reason I bought the first one was to get a copy of “ Meet On The Ledge “ although there were other good tracks on it.

I saw an early version of “ Wynder K Frog “ at the “ Cubi-Klub “ in the mid sixties. They played there a few times. Not exactly my style then, they were organ based and a bit jazzy when we were all into the blues and R&B.

I think Hunslet were expecting to make the play offs.

It doesn’t mean I can’t sympathise with fellow sportsmen and women. I’m sure you’ll understand that sentiment.
