I think he also played a couple of important games as a stand in for Joe Ashworthwhen Joe was out.
He was set for great things at Portsmouth as a young player but he got a badly broken leg in a Pompey v Southampton derby. After that he moved on to Peterborough. |

Paul Clarke ? I think we signed him from Liverpool. He was a star centre half as a young lad but fell by the wayside. I don’t think he played many games for the Dale. [Post edited 16 Aug 19:48]

That Dale team played some of the best football I’ve seen at Spotland/Crown Oil Arena. They were real entertainers. Just a little bit of investment and who knows what they could have done. There wasn’t a replacement for Tony Buck when he broke his leg. David Cross was thrown in at the deep end before he was ready.
My wife to be worked with Vince Radcliffe’s wife in the office at TBA so I got know a few of them. Great lads. |

I was there against Orient. They were a top class side with several players who either had or would later play at the top level. They actually won the division that season. No disgrace there at all. Just outplayed by a really good side. Newport aren’t anything like that. However the Dale ended the season in 8 th position. |

I saw him make 140 odd at the Moor when he was pro for Littleborough. By the time he was out all the fielders apart from the wicket keeper were all around the boundary rope. |

Along with Stan Milburn and Doug Winton possibly Graham Smith and Derek Ryder were the best pair of fullbacks the Dale ever had. Thanks for the memories. |

I was in the “ Two Ships “ in town. They had it on TV but I wasn’t too interested to be honest. Just as I walked to the bar to buy another pint I saw the Arsenal player ( Thomas ?) run through to score the winner. Good timing for me and Arsenal. |

It’s going to be tough mentally for York after that. They thought they’d got it won, now they have to win it all over again. Plus I think it’s always dangerous playing when in the back of your mind you think a draw will be enough. The ‘Dale know only a win will do so they have to go for it. |

Being able to take drinks outside into the stadium helps with beer sales. The pitch held up really well considering all the rain we’ve had. |

I don’t remember the fog at the Fulham game but I do remember the pitch being really icy and tricky underfoot. I was standing on the Sandy Lane End and I can still see Haynes picking the ball up in the old inside left position 20 to 25 yards out and firing the ball into the top corner of the net at the other end. So the fog couldn’t have been that bad. A class goal from a class player.
The thing I really remember was the four strange Fulham fans stood right in front of me. They’d come all the way to watch the game and they weren’t paying the game any attention all. Two of them had their backs to play most of the game and they were just chatting amongst themselves. When Haynes scored they were asking me what had had happened !
I remember a game against Tranmere at Spotland in the early to mid 1960’s when both teams were going well at the top of the league and a big crowd was anticipated. That was called off because of fog but in truth it should have never even started. You couldn’t see to the half way line from behind the goals at the Church Inn end at KO time. They played for about 20 minutes and then called it off. Much needed funds I suppose. [Post edited 29 Dec 2025 14:33]

Far from a great goal but the first I can remember. Playing Southport at home in the early 1960’s. It was 0-0 with about 10 minute to go. There’s a massive goal mouth scramble in the Sandy Lane end goal. Louis Bimpson throws himself full length to head home the loose ball. As he belly flops into a very sandy goalmouth his chewing gum flies out of his mouth and lands in the sand, I was right behind the goals and I was amazed to see him calmly pick the chewing gum out of the sand and put it back in his mouth. Very well remembered .i was watching from that Kop or hill at the Church Inn end so I wasn’t sure exactly what had happened down the Sandy Lane. From my view point the ball appear to go into the goal and then all hell broke loose, [Post edited 17 Aug 2025 21:15]

What struck me about Rees was he was keeping Big Reg relatively quiet before Gall got sent off. After that Brighton went all out for goals they left Rees at the back marking Big Reg and Don McKenzie, the Dale left winger, at the same time ! He actually managed them quite well. He looked to be a player with a big future to me. It was a tragedy he died at such young age. [Post edited 14 Aug 2025 20:45]

Correct. Do you remember the furore over the penalty in the first half. The Dale were attacking the Church Inn end, I was in the Sandy. There was an almighty scuffle in the goalmouth and the ball ended up in the back of the Brighton net. The ref gives a goal but the Brighton players say it went in through a hole in the roof of the net. They point out the hole and insist the ref go and consult his linesman. So he goes over, they have a chat, then the ref comes back and ————— gives the Dale a penalty for handball ! Cue loads more arguing from Brighton. Jimmy Thompson calmly waits for it to all die down, and then slots the penalty away.
Their star player that night, a young lad called Barry Rees, who had just joined them from Everton for big money died in a car crash a few weeks later. |
