Southampton Reported To Have Approached Liverpool For Right Back ! But Why ?
Monday, 20th Jun 2022 22:12

If there is one position that Saints have an abundance of talent in, it is the right back position, that being the case then why are Sky Sports claiming that the club have approached Liverpool to sign one.

Southampton have made an approach to sign Liverpool youngster, Neco Williams, according to a report from Sky Sports today, the 21 year old is an undoubted talent and has already earned 21 caps for Wales, ironically 8 games more than he has played for the Anfield club in the Premier League.

He also spent the second half of last season helping Fulham to the Championship title.

Liverpool are said to be looking for around £20m to let Williams leave permanently. With so much quality already in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, he is likely to find opportunities hard to come by this season.

Whether he is quite worth that just yet is open to debate, but the big question is why Saints would spend £20 million on a player who is predominantly a right back, although he can play as an attacking right sided midfielder.

Saints already have three youngsters in this position, Tino Livramento was the main choice until his injury, but arguably Kyle Walker Peters is a better player, there is also Yan Valery who a couple of years ago looked to be a great talent in the position and if that is not enough James Ward Prowse has filled in there when needed.

Of course Livramento is likely to be out till January, but given the six week break for the World Cup in November and December the number of game he will miss is not quite so many as in a normal season.

The only reason why Ralph Hasenhuttl would be going for Williams is that he intends to play either him or Tino Livramento in the wide right spot.

Whilst if Williams was to sign for Saints it would not exactly be the worst transfer signing we have made, many Southampton fans would argue that before we pack out the right back spot, there are several other positions that need money spending on them first.

Williams played left back for Wales in their recent World Cup qualifier against Ukraine and was absolute quality.

Do we need a new left back either, we have Perraud, Walker Peters can play there and Thierry Small can break through in that position this season

Paying 20M for a defender from Liverpool for someone unproven at PL level does not strike me as being a Saints type of transfer. If that went through it would be very different to what we have seen in the last few years.

I think it would be more likely that we would pick up an emerging talent from another league or that the price would be more in the region of what we paid for KWP.

We let Matt go for less than that and he was more proven at PL level.

He fits the moneyball philosophy.

Young, talented, able to play week in, week out in our team at full back or midfield and in a season or two will be a seasoned pro and still only 22 and probably worth £10m more than we paid.

Forget the fact that we already have a England international available for right back - this is all about the money.

We bought a right back we didn’t need last summer.
It’s the Southampton way 🤷‍♂️

It's because Ralph hasn't got a clue and will buy him to play him as a striker next season.

My first reaction was similar to yours wrathoftazz, although I had Ralph playing him in goal.
