I was born in Malta (my dad was a submariner in the RN and based there) and I love going back now & again. Lovely, happy, friendly people. That win in Finland today was outstanding!
Yeh, my Grandad was a radio operator and was based there (as well as what is now Sri Lanka and, weirdly, Flowerdown in Winchester), so my mum lived around those 3 places. My eldest lad is on Prince of Wales at the moment and was meant to be going to Malta on his current deployment but it changed, which was a shame
Terrible match, but the Malta team bloody loved it at the end!

12-years at sea on HM Ships in my younger days and never once did we pay a visit to Malta! A hundred other ports around the globe but never once to Malta. Unbelievable. I've had to pay my own way there a few times since over the years & always had a great time.
My first ever ship was HMS Bulwark, a carrier, with a crew of 1,000 (2,000 when we had commandoes and aircrew embarked) - so good luck to your lad on that floating city! I saw a photo of her transiting the Suez Canal the other day en route to the Med. Nice jolly for your lad to be on, what with visits to Australia & Japan.

He loved Japan and I think they loved 'us'. He is in Italy shortly and then has decompression* in Gibralter before arriving back in a couple of week. There will be tears. Not least because I have had to book a hotel in Portsmouth the night before.
*Decompression/piss up to get it out their system.
