The by-election result 08:29 - Feb 27 with 443 viewsPatfromPoole

Looks to me that we are heading for a coalition government in a couple of years.

Only question is whether it will be;

- Labour / Lib Dems / Greens, or;
- Tories / Reform

What a mess.

This could all have been avoided if Starmer and Reeves (who I voted for 2 years ago) hadn’t made such a shitshow of things.

If Starmer is still leading the Labour Party then they will be wiped out like the Tories were at the last election. Our system needs reforming though. It’s crazy any party can win a majority with 30 per cent of the vote.

Re last night I see Farage is blaming a coalition of woke progressives and Islamists. Like Islamists are going to vote for a party led by a gay Jewish man. Great result for the Greens who are becoming the party for the left. Reform on the right and the two main parties looking like becoming increasingly irrelevant. The country is hopelessly divided.

Isn't the Green Party the one that wants to rejoin the EU as soon as possible? Perhaps people have had enough of the economic woes caused by Brexit.

There is also an obvious need for European military cooperation to combat the threat of Trump and Putin. Young people especially want a safe and prosperous future.

Latest YouGov Brext Poll numbers

From all the UK population

63% - Rejoin EU
37% - Stay Out of EU

Among the 18-25 demographic

86% - Rejoin EU

People learn from past mistakes and vote accordingly. We'd live in a one party state forever if they didn't. Brexit has proven to be a disaster. A massive majority now want to rejoin the EU. Get over it.

I did not back leaving the EU, but I respected that the majority had voted for it.

I don't think leaving the EU has caused much of our issues over the last decade, although the EU itself has not helped with their stubbornness in making it difficult for us to actually leave.

Many of the issues of this country are not of its own making, Covid, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, illegal immigration, Trump tariffs etc are all major factors both for the previous government and now for the current one.

Party politics in this country as changing, both Labour & the Tories have people in it with agendas of their own and not for the good of the country, the people want change.

The Green party winning is not unexpected, by elections are always protest votes, but overall the combination of their views and their strategy of now putting themselves up as a socialist alternative to Labour will not win them many votes.

Starmer is not the greatest leader Labour or this country has had, but what would replace him as Labour leader is even more worrying

The Greens are Communists, they hate companies that make profits (they don't realise making profits are what pays for everything) they despise anyone who does really well. On top of that they want to legalise all drugs, including crack cocane and heroine and they want open borders. So the half a billion people who want to move to the West (UK) can come, even though the rest of Europe and the world are tightening their borders.

Gorton and Denton is 36% Muslim, how long will it be until Britain is the same? When the majority of this countries' councillors and MPs are Muslim they will impose their values on our society. Let's hope they will be as nice to us as we have been to them.

All of those things are factually incorrect. The Green Party is not Communist. It supports small business but is against the big corporate non tax paying multi nationals. They want controlled immigration that treats people humanely. They want to rejoin the EU. On drugs they want to treat the problem as a health issue rather than a criminal one saying prohibition doesn’t and hasn’t worked.

There will be a hung parliament if either or both of the main parties don't get their act together. It definitely could be a "mess".

Reform will win in most of the Conservative supporting areas.
Greens will win in the Labour supporting areas.
Liberal Democrats will also take some seats.

Leaving the EU has exacerbated the situation.

The UK has tried to cosy up to Trump but he’s full of shit so that’s not a sensible, long-term strategy.

Brexit has cost the UK billions in lost trade and the absolute whoppers who voted for it should be paying the rest of us back.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.

You clearly haven’t read or looked at the policies or listened to the winning candidate or the leader of the Greens. I don’t support all what they say like leaving NATO but find some of their views interesting.

The Greens are appealing to certain types of people, who are fed up of struggling, can't afford a house, can't pay the bills, fed up of being told what to do by ungrateful, selfish bossess, in many cases, earning nowhere near enough to cover all the bills.

And for those blaming Brexit, just remember that people were struggling way before the vote to leave and many struggling people voted for it, because they were fed up of being ignored. And after Brexit, these people are still being ignored, the towns continue to close down, drugs, knife crime feeling overwhelming, immigration a mess, people are looking for a solution to issues that under Labour and the Tories just don't get solved.

But yes, it is ironic that a 36 per cent Muslim area, has voted for a party with a gay leader, who thinks that women can have c@cks. It really is a mad world at the moment.

As I said, many people were losing before the Brexit vote, so it's not just Brexit is it? Many people in poor areas voted for Brexit too, not just rich people. They were struggling then before Brexit, and nothing has changed, hence the sudden popularity of the Green party.

I’ve just been reading up on Polanski.

He’s an interesting character, f’sure.

I note that he and Caroline Lucas, who I have always rather admired, seem to be quite a long way apart from being political colleagues.
