| Good Quote From Danny Dyer 18:13 - Oct 26 with 3527 views | SaintNick | I can't argue with this. “The team you support, picks you. I see loads of people following teams they’ve got absolutely no connection to. You should be supporting the side you’ve been born to support. If you’re not from Liverpool, I just don’t get why you’d want to support Liverpool. Yeah, your able to choose whoever you want, but you’ll never get that true feeling of being in a ground where everyone’s from the same place, speaks the same, and lives it the same way. That’s what it’s like being a West Ham fan. We all sort of know each other, and these big clubs turn up expecting that they will take three points. Most of the time they do, but every now and then you pull off a massive result, and it means everything to the lads in the ground. If you’re a Cockney supporting Liverpool, you’ll never get that feeling. Singing songs about places you’ve got no connection to, it just doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve always found it strange. And when you’ve got two Londoners, one supporting United and the other Liverpool, arguing about their rivalry… it just feels off. That rivalry comes from history, from the docks, from working-class roots. It runs deep. If you’re from somewhere like Colchester, go and support Colchester. That’s your club.” | |

| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 13:26 - Oct 28 with 588 views | Southamptonfan | I think one or two are missing the point here. - If your dad, mum was born in Southampton, and you were born in another city, you follow your parents and support the Saints - Perfect, that's fine, perfectly understandable and understandable for any other club. - If you were born in Southampton but move away and carry on supporting the Saints- great, so you should. - If you live in London, the North, or abroad and support Southampton without any link to the city - you're potentially mad with all the choices you have, but great come and support the Saints. - If you live in a place where there isn't a team, you choose one - okay fine. - If you support Saints and also go and watch another lower league side like Eastleigh or Totton, great, nothing wrong with that. What Danny Dyer is saying is that someone who lives in London and was born there, or any other city with a football club, why would you support anyone but your own team in the city you were born? Surely, you want to be able to watch your team play without having to travel 200 miles, spwnding hundreds of pounds every home game. At Stratford station after the game, amongst hordes of West Ham fans, I saw a guy in a Man U tracksuit. Would you not support one of the top London teams? The Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City shirts you see everywhere, they are just attention seeking, look at me idiots who never watch them because they are miles away. What is the point of supporting a team miles.away just because they are good? It's these glory hunters that Danny Dyer is getting at. They arn't real fans, just look at me, I am wearing the shirt of a top team and that's it. He is also touching on the disrespect shown too by a few idiots i.e People walking around in a top 6 shirt on match day in another city or getting in home ends and cheering goals, like the Arsenal fans who live in Ipswich disprespecting the Ipswich people they live next door to , getting a ticket in the home end and cheering. Utter tw@ts. Other than that, everyone should just support the Saints 😜 [Post edited 28 Oct 13:35]

| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 13:07 - Oct 28 by franniesTache | I'd imagine if sotonains are asking you why you support saints it's not a dig, it's probably us being baffled why anyone would choose to inflict this on themselves if they didn't have to |
I don't remember it ever being a conscious decision or choice to be honest When I first got interested in football my grandad who was from Southampton, my dad and older brother all supported and went to games. My dad also bought me a candy stripes Admiral home shirt, so that was it really. If you look at the context of the times Saints were a good choice, established in the first division with a charismatic manager and a couple of seasons before we signed Kevin Keegan My brother lost interest in the mid 80's, he never really got over the disappointment of losing the semi-final to Everton but still keeps an eye out for the results My grandad passed away in the early 90's, his last game was when we beat Liverpool 4-1 in 1989 which is probably the best I've ever seen Saints play and a real favorite game I've been to So its just something that my dad and I do, have done for over 40 years and will continue to do

Some good points made in several posts on this thread and as has been said, supporting a team is about having links to that club. I know people who have moved down here for work from Liverpool and have never stopped supporting Liverpool, but unable to watch them regularly anymore have started watching Saints and supporting them as this is there adopted home city. That too is acceptable

Yes, a mate of mine who lives in Bournemouth but is from Paisley and is an ardent Celtic supporter also supports Saints because he's lived in the area a long time and wants to go to live football, he used to have a season ticket for a few years too.
