Awful display being a six point game, lemina gives ball away 1 nil Hojbjerg gives ball away 2 nil no cover on third 3nil.
Tadic pathetic along with Redmond and many others. We are definitely in the s--it if we can't up our game for this we are in big-time trouble. Honestly don't know where we go from here other than relegated.

I’ve been a supporter of Saints for over 50 years & I cannot remember a worse display by players wearing a Southampton shirt. Even in league one we played with pride, courage & determination. This was a truly abysmal display by players who obviously just do not give a s..t about what the Saints means to the supporters - those of us who truly care about our proud history & team.
An utterly appalling & gutless display by a bunch of overpaid prima donnas.

Fans must face up to the fact that our players are not up to the required standard. Do we blame this manager for not motivating the team, not selecting the right team, poor substitutions? Surely every Saints fan can now see that whatever manager we have had the team is just not good enough.
Cedric again poor and the long diagonal ball catches him out again and again and then he sheepishly runs away. Not bad at aimlessly booting the ball upfield.
Bertrand seems depressed and lacks motivation and is a poor example to the rest of the team.
Hoedt has not been the good buy that Nick keeps telling us. He makes as many mistakes as Yoshi
Jack S not bad and should thrive next season wherever he plays.
Lemina is an enigma, one good game and three bad games.
Hojberg a great tryer but is he good enough?
Tadic had a good game three seasons ago.
Redmond is too full of himself and is excellent at running away from the goal
Charlie Austin would never get in the team with any decent earlier competition like RL or Pelle, Tho he does try to score.
Gabby is a class player in the wrong team and contributes little.
Long can chase all day, but what good does it do, ok sometimes it works but it doesn't justify a place in the team
Boufal I love to observe his skills but like Long that doesn't earn him a place.
Carrillo with a better midfield to provide support may be ok but at present is a waste of space.
Oh I forgot McCarthy. Without him our Goal difference would be horrendous

It does not matter a Hoot whether the manager speaks Double Dutch or Welsh the players are simply not good enough and why is that? The investment in new quality players has been lamentable. The rot set in two seasons ago. Bad players, bad management

Why doesn't this player rating thing have zeroes and negatives? I want to give Bertrand and Tadic less than McCarthy but I'm not prepared to give McCarthy 2.

Midfield was woeful, weak bunch of short arses that regularly get turned over by more physically stronger opposition. This has been the case for two seasons now and we continue to buy players who can’t cope in this league. Only physical presence we have is with Romeo but for some reason he can’t make it into the team? We will go down this season with this current crop as they are just not man enough for the challenge

Time to put the strong squad let down by poor management myth to bed. Not much to add to Ace's excellent summary. Complacency, arrogance and incompetence from the board have allowed a two year decline that's taken us from 6th place to relegation. The players aren't good enough and we deserve to be where we are. We all desperately tried to convince ourselves that a decent second half at a third division side was the turning point. It wasn't was it? Thanks Les. Every last supporter of our club, whatever their particular views or approaches, saw all the problems developing over months and months and YOU SOLVED NONE OF THEM. Have the decency to take responsibility and GET OUT...

What an utter disgrace. Players couldn't care less. Half the team look as though they've already got new clubs for next season, we all know who they are. Don't play them, play players who are prepared to fight & give 100%. DT & NR have been a joke all season & most of last, yet they still play.

qnehl1 added 08:37 - Apr 1

In a relegation battle experience and character is needed.
Problem is, WE DONT HAVE ANY!!

They all got sold to make a small profit, i'm talking about players like Fonte and Lambert here?
Look back over the past two seasons, we have been awful since we let Fonte go, maybe he was the glue holding the team together.

Look stop whingeing, we all know that Cortese would have pur us 200 million plus in debt by now, we would have a bigger stadium, better players and passion and have never hired these second rate managers, Reed would only be in charge of recruitment not the brilliant DoF he is so over qualified for...

Don't you realise KL has made herself debt free is that not what we all wanted, the new owner has 210 million of debt and a div 1 team but Kat and Ralph kept their promises on self sustaining, we all thought they meant the club but that's our fault for not understanding Ralph's motivational corporate speak..

Things could be much much worse.....so we have been told, I just keep trying to find out how...

This was an absolute embarrassment this Saints team are they are overpaid and overrated and seem to think its ok to rip the fans off with the rubbish they are giving us week in week out but this runs so much deeper Les Reed and Ralph Kruger should be ashamed of themselves for ripping our club apart and still taking their huge pay packets every month when the hard working fans have to use their hard earned wages to watch this rubbish its so sad to see this great club being destroyed by these criminals. We Need to act NOW

The only power we have is to stay away but people won't and 3000 gullible heart-driven fans made the trek yesterday in the belief that they would see a miraculous new beginning. They keep hoping, they keep getting kicked in the gonads and yet they keep coming back for more.

Well lads you've got the change you've been pining for and indeed Les has take us to another level just as he promised.

STAY AWAY! That is the only way to hurt them and stuff this miserable bunch of no-hopers, they'll be gone before the dust has settled in May.

Face up to reality and stop believing in this miracle. It was never going to happen. We've been down for weeks in all but name.

The gutless performance reminded me of the Pompey game last time we were relegated we are in free fall again all the way back to Div 1. How Marko gets a free header and then reacts quicker to put the ball in just goes to show how crap our centre backs are bring back yoshi at least he shows heart these players should be playing for their semi final place if I was sparky I would give a few youngsters a chance and that includes the semi final, they will be the players who will be here next season. Yesterday told me we were down not on the result but with the performance the players gave

Hughes has said he now needs to turn to players he can rely on. Who are they?
Goalie, ok, yes McCarthy, no question.
Full backs, Soares and Bertrand. Neither have covered themselves in glory recently. Cedric in particular was awful Saturday. Pied has performed well every time he's been given a chance, so I'd say Pied next time. And Bertrand, I suppose you stick with him, but would it do any harm to bring McQueen back?
Central defence. Basically Stephens and Hoedt are apprenticing for life in the championship. They're both rubbish right now and Hoedt in particualar (sorry Nick, but I never understood your enthusiasm for this bloke). Yoshida is all guts. If he's fit he has to replace one of these apprentices.
DM. Hojberg, Lemna and Romeu are what we've got, basically. Hojberg looks as if he gives a shit, so I'd keep him. Toss up between the other two.
AM. This is where we have too many players and not an ounce of real quality. Redmond, Boufal, Tadic, they are all basically incapable or unwilling to the do the job that's needed right now. Sims has to start before any of them, because he has skill, drive, and enthusiasm, and he's not predictable for other teams.
Midfield: JWP, and Davis. JWP is often worth including, but he's usually ineffectual. But compared to the AM choices, he is what we've got
Strikers. Austin at least was trying, so you keep him in. Long should never ever be thought of as a striker; he's a total waste of space at this level. Gabbiadini and Carillo are fish out of water at this point. No point in starting either of them , despite fan feeling for Gabbi. (Bring back Gallagher or try Obafemi again. )

So for me, next time out:

McCarthy
Pied, Bertrand, Yoshida, Stephens or Hoedt
Hojberg, Lemina or Romeu
Sims, JWP, Redmond/Tadic/Boufal
Austin
Subs: Forster, McQueen, Cedric, Stepens/Hoedt, Lemina/Romeu, Redmond/Tadic/Boufal, Gabbiadini

Sincerely for you Nick..why talk about players the problems lie way beyond them.
I have been the arch board opponent for 4 years, managers have taken flak, now the players failings are finally being exposed and taking flak, yet it is sleight of hand, the real villains are still here, the real responsibility lies with them.

Look fans no one is going to turn a one footed ultra lightweight negative Redmond into a superstar winger, scrub that a reasonable PL winger, no one can teach positioning and defending to defenders who make the same mistakes game after game, no one is going to turn Charlie into a bulletproof indestructable athlete, nor Gabbi into Van Persie, nor teach Soares to cross, or anyone to take corners bar JWP who brings other problems, no one is going to turn a group of ever changing players into a single harmonised growing up together team..

However, as horrible as that may all be it is like an iceberg what we do not see that is the real issue.

To give the new board and Kat a 'clean sheet' it was important to work the PR and spin the negative on Cortese, one such area was the Staplewood black hole, now the overspend was caused in the main by the relentless pursuit of latest methodologies and technology, even as Staplewood was expanded City and Utd, CFC had cottoned on, I said back in 2013 we could not expect our academy and recruitment 'edge' to not be replicated and improved on...Steve Jobs made an interesting observation the moment something is designed and working it is already redundant, closer to home SAF was always looking at the next goal not his current achievement.

The PL is a constantly evolving model, whatever you spent last year will not be enough, whatever technical, tactical, training advantages you have this year will be superceded the following year...

The PL is an investment 'plus' model, what Kat adopted was doomed the moment it was acted upon, in every aspect SFC who for an all too brief period were media darlings, became such because the club was ahead of the curve, when NC was handed his hat, the baby was effectively thrown out with the bathwater.

If you are in the business of evolution then those that fail to adapt die out and that is what we as supporters are up against.

What should have been was Staplewood 'still' ahead of its time, 3x the money into recruitment of the best youth and academy staffing in Europe (not jobs for mates), a 45.000 stadium, half the sales if that and certainly not to strengthen one club, the retention of MoPo and the project, SFC 'branded' as THE Southern powerhouse...

None of this is dreaming, nor unaffordable (certainly not 210 million) it WAS a basic requirement of keeping pace with change, in 3 years time 7/8 clubs will be circa 55-60k or more capacity, 5 clubs will have increased capacity by over 50%..what have we done?, the top 8 will have doubled commercial revenues in the next 3 years from already serious levels...our corporate is nothing, the stadium still a flatpack, after the fat lady sings what will we have accomplished in comparison to say BHA or Bmuff next year......

The players infuriate because they play for my club but they were chosen by others, the team ethos has been installed by others, the negativity and non ambitious vibe ditto and the appalling re-investment and forward thinking again is way above the players abilities to solve......if we cannot have evolution let us have revolution.

SaintBrock added 11:32 - Apr 2

It will be very hard to achieve any of those ambitions in the Championship, whoever might be running the club in future. One suspects that we are finally heading back to where we probably belong in terms of actual size and ambition, the second divison to give it it's proper name.

straight_pass added 16:09 - Apr 2

Clearly the team were nervous and unsure about tactics from the whistle. We were soon overrun in the midfield and after the second goal it quickly became damage limitation.
I cannot ever remember many games when the team has looked so lost!!! What have we been doing at Staplewood?
6

SanMarco added 20:28 - Apr 2

DPeps - Nick needs to come up with some positives for the 'verdict' and that is taking time - lots of time...

warrens76 - I am sure you are right on the issue of Cortese unfairly being made the villain but I, honestly, do not understand the 'road not travelled' that you ouline. So, Cortese stays with lots of forward looking ideas and, keeping within fair play rules, and notwithstanding the desire of players and managers to earn more and win more NOW, we progress up the table and stay there. We, of course, will never know what would have happened if Cortese had stayed but MoPo not going to Spuds is quite frankly unbelievable. A bit like VVD with his injury NC's departure gave MoPo a reason for something he was going to do anyway. I always thought that NC's ambitions were too big for a club of our size. I know that sort of statement makes some fans very angry (the old 'ambition' chestnut again) but I believe that it is probably true and as with all 'what ifs' we will never know.

Hard game to watch.
Playing Austin from the start and leaving Sims out of the squad was a mistake by Hughes.

I´m as disappointeed as anyone but for me it´s still too early to give up.

Leapfrog Huddersfield and keep Stoke behind us (which is not the biggest task in the world) means no relegation = success.

If Hudderfield don´t make more than 5 points in their last 6 games and we keep Stoke behind us, the following results will keep us up:

Bournemouh at home: 3 points
Swansea away: 3 points
Everton away: 1 point
Leicester away: 1 point.

= 8 points

= 36 points total.
