In reply to Nicks comment - you're absolutely right to have reservations and it would be daft to think that everything is magically going to be fine.
We're not privy to what goes on behind the scenes and tone of the ways we can form an opinion about Selles is how he speaks/acts/looks publicly. Thats doesn't necessarily mean accepting everything at face value but we are entitled to make an emotional judgment about whether we feel that connection with him. If we do, and it looked like it from the fans on Saturday, and comments on here, it will help us for the remaining games.
I sometimes don't agree with Stmark, but I'm absolutely with him on this one. |

Thank goodness for that! We cleary need to be realistic that playing in the Championship is the most likely outcome for us next season, but appointing Selles seems like a sensible, logical decision by the club.
He feels like a good fit for us - in a way that Jones just didn't - knows the players and wants the job. I honestly don't think theres anything to be lost here and he gives us a fighting chance of getting the performances we need to stay up. Its all about commitment and leadership now. And a few dollops of luck would help too. |

I agree with Nick - it has to be a positive sign that the club are looking at the kind of player pretty much everyone can see that we need. As for the last minute timing, maybe it’s just to do with realising a loan deal was on the cards , or maybe the coaching staff are having a bit of input, but I don’t think the club operate on a shoot from the hip basis and (hopefully) if they were looking at Coady they’ll have some others in mind too.
Also agree with ItchenNorth - Ralph works with the players he’s given. Saints have got a very clear transfer policy and the manager has to fall into line with that. Ralph really does seem to care about the club, and that counts for a lot with me. It’s a rollercoaster. Sometimes exciting, sometimes downright scary. |

I was totally caught off guard by this, but the speed it happened makes me think that Villa have made Saints a sensible offer which they’ve accepted without needing to think about it too much.
As fans we can be disappointed or angry or upset about it.....but it is still better, from any perspective, than turning it down and then another club (Spurs springs to mind) putting in a last minute offer for half what we’ve got from Villa.
The chances are that we were always going to have to replace Danny, either this season or next, and the thing that concerns me more than anything is how we are going to do that. We play differently with him - sharper, more focussed - than we do without him. Replacing your main striker is always risky, but the pursuit of Armstrong (whether it comes off or not) at least shows there’s some sort of plan in place.
On a positive note Villa have already spent north of £90 million this window......I really hope they can’t now make a realistic offer for JWP. |

Sad to see Maya go. Much as the time is probably right for him to move on it’s a bit of a gamble for us, and I’ve got a horrible feeling we might miss him before the end of the season.
Agree with all the other posts - given the problems we’ve had with our (childish, sulky, prima donna ish) more “talented†defenders, Maya was always one who put the team first. Played where and when he was needed and always gave him 100%. Loved him for that and wish him well in Italy. |

Really pleased I decided to go to this game in the end. I agree it wasn’t a particularly good game, and take the point about not getting too carried away.......but there were some real positives to be had out of that.
The defence looked pretty calm and collected (although if Mitrovic had been more prepared to play football rather than wrestle we might have been in trouble) and Bertrand gives us much more of an attacking option, we’ve really missed him. JWP had a great game and it was a fantastic to see the midfield as a whole looking so positive and purposeful. Charlie didn’t get many chances but I thought his link up play and overall work rate made a real contribution. He did looked knackered by the second half though.
Some tough games ahead but at least this puts us in the best possible position for the team ( and the supporters) to go into them with the right attitude. |

I too am cautiously optimistic. It’s nice to be able to get back to that after the car crash of Hughes’ time in charge. I think Hasenhuttl’s name was mentioned before Hughes was appointed, so it’s encouraging that the club have got someone they’ve clearly had their eye on for a while. He’s got his work cut out mind you....
Given that we’re firmly on course for relegation I hope he can turn that round. Failing that, just give him time get the team right and accept that might be happening from the Championship. |

Accepting that it was only a friendly, I thought Celta Vigo gave us a pretty good run out, they looked good technically, their passing was quick and accurate.....but they weren’t any where near as physical as, say, Burnley and Everton will be.
On the positives, Gabbiadini and Austin looked good together (would love to think that Gabbiadini is going to get a proper run in the side this season). Hughes has got a load of tactical options in midfield with Armstrong and Hojberg in particular looking strong last night.
Vestergaard and Elyounoussi looked decent. Bednarek looks better whenever I see him play but is still definitely not the finished article. Hoedt is a real concern though. Just because we paid a lot of money for him doesn’t automatically make him a good player. Definitely still a place for Yoshida. Agree with Arthurfane on that one (and about Targett).

I’ve said my piece on Mark Hughes, so on a more optimistic note I reckon he’ll see this as his best ever chance of managing at a cup final, and hopefully he’ll be equally keen to prove a point to Stoke in the league. The 2 million quid will help too. |

I am old enough to remember Hughes playing for Saints. He was dreadful: lazy and dirty. If people on here think that we need a manager who can take players to task for lack of effort Hughes doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Teams he’s managed have played some of the worst football It’s been my misfortune to watch. “Football is about glory, about doing things in styleâ€, Joyless tossers like Hughes are the antithesis of that, and I don’t want him associated with us in any capacity
I support a football club, not a business. I appreciate that commercial success and revenue affect what happens on the pitch but it doesn’t actually matter to me what league we’re in. Watching entertaining football does matter. |

We wanted a striker, and we’ve got one. What’s not to like?
I only know what I’ve read about him and seen on YouTube, but I’m happy to give him a few games and see what he looks like. From my reading of the Monaco fan board (and my French is admittedly pretty grim) it looks like they aren’t too sad to see the back of him, and think they’ve done well on the price. The criticism of him seems to be that he is a bit one dimensional. Solid but not spectacular.
Well, at this stage in the season, flirting with relegation and having a problem converting chances (but not creating them) I think there’s a strong case for saying that a solid, unspectacular bloke who knows where the goal is precisely what we need. With Gabbiadini as an alternative (or, heaven forbid, alongside) we’ll have more of a tactical range too.

That was an utter shambles. Only my second visit to St Mary’s this season (the other was the Wolves game, so I’m clearly making bad choices somewhere along the line), and not much incentive to go back for more.
I can see that Boufal has got some real talent, but am failing to see where he or Tadic are making effective contributions at the moment. Whatever the reasons there were a lot of players who had off days yesterday - Cedric and Lemina are both terrific players coming back from injury but looked off the pace. Van Dijk just looked off the pace.
We looked a lot more incisive with Redmond and Gabbiadini on (of course Leicester were coasting by then). I agree with a lot of the comments about squad rotation. I’d be happier if Pellegrino chose his best team and stuck with it, at least then we’d have a continuity of style which is something the players would maybe be happier with.
The board had a lot of time to think about Pellegrino’s appointment. It is difficult in the light of yesterday’s performance but I’d like to think that we, as fans, have learnt something from how Puel was treated last season. Pellegrino has good players at his disposal. He is capable of getting things right and getting good performances from them. We might just have to trust, be patient, and get behind the team. |
