Farewell To Michael Obafemi
at 10:49:41

When players like Tella and Livramento get their starts and really impress it puts the performances/levels of some of the other youngsters into perspective.

I think Obafemi is right to drop down a division and I wish him well.

Who Was To Blame For The Turnstile Fiasco At St Mary's !
at 15:29:57

The only thing I would add to this article is that:

1. There were unusually large queues at the Chapel Stand for the Bilbao game, which was two weeks ago.
2. A lot of the delay yesterday was that the season ticket cards could be read but that the time it took for the machines to reset between each fan going in was not instantaneous.

I therefore have my doubts that the club only realised there was a problem yesterday and if it was a surprise then why didn't they know earlier, because the evidence was or should have been there?

Ralph Hasenhuttl Addresses Saints Fans On Ings Transfer
at 11:05:05

All very well to criticise Ings, but Villa are demonstrating an ambition in the Premier League that Saints simply aren't. Most people watching from the outside see a club, with Gao in charge, trying to make ends meet and stay in the league. The players will be a lot closer to what's going on.

If a club with, quite clearly, much more ambition is coming in for you and offering you more money. Seriously, what are you going to do?

We have once again sold one of our best players. I will be very surprised if JWP doesn't follow him.

Got to look at the ambition of the club. Got to look at the owner we've got.

England Defeat Highlights Deficiencies In The Squad
at 13:10:09

Difficult to fault the decision to take Rice and Phillips. But when Henderson came on he didn't have the steadying impact that I thought he would and on a couple of occassions he made poor passes to nobody.

I wasn't sure whether JWP was attacking enough from open play to be in the team, but if we are going to carry on with this 'safety first' style then maybe he does have a role to play. He's 4 years younger than Henderson for a start. Maybe it's time for JWP to replace him.

But got to assume that he is thinking that if he moves to a bigger club he can expect to be playing in Qatar next year.

Of All The Southampton Transfer Rumours, There Is One To Worry About !
at 09:48:56

If I was JWP, aged 26 and having just missed out on Euros place, I would be thinking hard about the next few years.

And, yes, I would be thinking about where I might go and the players that I might be playing alongside but I would also be thinking hard about my own club and its ambitions.

Sitting on the sidelines, many of us have got the distinct impression of a club, if not in decline, certainly doing no more than tread water at the moment. JWP will have a much closer view of all that and will also have had the experience of having had to work hard as a player this season to make up for the deficiencies or inexperience of some of those around him.

The question for me is can Saints show JWP that it has the ambition to match what he now needs for this stage of his career?

David Moyes West Ham Turnaround Can Give Hope For Southampton Supporters

No evidence at all that Ralph has learned from every mistake. Quite the contrary. That's why many fans are increasingly frustrated with him.

Southampton At West Ham United The Verdict
at 10:36:36

The table is pretty clear. It's our defence that's let us down this season. We've conceded 68 goals which is 5 more than Sheffield Utd so even if you scratch the 3 that were unfairly conceded at Old Trafford after Bednarek was wrongly sent off, we've still conceded more than the bottom club. (Only West Brom, 76, have conceded more).

For me, yes, Bednarek and Vestergaard are not perfect but the real defensive issues have been - the loss of KWP for many games with no adequate replacement; the loss of Romeu for many games as a buffer in front of the back 2, with no adequate replacement; the loss of Bertrand for some games with no adequate replacement; and a manager who is primarily focused on an attacking style of play and who was simply unable to find solutions to our defensive problems (either week on week or during the games themselves).

Big summer ahead. The need to strengthen the squad has become an acute problem but how we're going to do that while this owner with his financial limitations is in charge is anyone's guess. And there is a chance that we will also lose Ings.

At least we can have a few weeks off from the regular grind of defeats that this season became!

Southampton V Leeds United The Verdict
at 10:36:49

I don't doubt Djenepo's commitment. But he is not a very good footballer. Trying hard when he doesn't have the ability to back it up just leaves him chasing shadows and, at best, being nuisance to the other team. He was involved in hardly any of the good attacking play in the first half and was on his own without the ball on the left wing for much of the second.

Taking off Tella and leaving Djenepo on was, for me, Ralph at his most insane.

Saints Can Now Breathe After Fulham Defeat Ends Relegation Worries
at 22:51:46

We have never been in any relegation danger. Never even within striking distance of the bottom three.

I will be amazed if there is any premium at all from the players feeling more relaxed about their safety. I don't think that has factored at all for them.

The sad think is that the desire and commitment has been there. It's poor tactics and lack of ability of footballing ability that has let us down.

In any normal world, the next four games would be about Ralph saving his skin. We have currently lost half of the games we've played and 13 of the 18 we've played in 2021.

'Blips' we can cope with. This is long term underinvestment, long term squad weakening and, this season, long term serious under achievement.

I can take the rough with the smooth with the best of them, but 3 wins per every 13 losses is a pretty hard slog for anyone!

A Fulham win for me please. I don't like Burnley and I have been impressed by the way Scott Parker has got as much as he has out of this team.

A Fulham win will put a bit more pressure on us for the Palace game and also for the game against Fulham next week. I'd like to see if we can actually put in a performance when there is a bit of jeopardy involved.

And let's face it Fulham are not going to overtake take us. Even if they beat Burnley and us, they've sill got to get a win at Old Trafford and beat Newcastle on the final day. They've only won 5 all season. It's not going to happen.

And my guess is that we're also going to finish 17th whatever happens. Which is no more that we deserve after a truly pathetic set of results since January.

Southampton At Liverpool The Verdict
at 22:36:05

We’ve seen enough now. I couldn’t give a sh!t about signs of improvement. I’ll celebrate when we next win.

We have lost so many games. Our early good performances this season were the exception that proves the rule.

I think our current form is a true reflection of where we are as a football club. Too few quality players, a very weak squad, and a manager with obvious limitations.

Big changes needed.

Ralph Focusing Saints On Next Season Could Be Bad News For Ryan Bertrand.
at 10:27:33

Ralph does not have the luxury of looking towards next season.

Since we beat Liverpool on 4 Jan, we've lost 6 on the bounce in the PL, and then another 6 out of the next 9.

If Ralph cannot stop this run of defeats in the next 6 games, someone else will need to take over.

Yes, he's got his problems with no money, a weak squad and maybe a few players with their minds elsewhere, but we've seen enough evidence now to know that Ralph too has some major limitations when it comes to managing a game.

If he can't turn things around in the final 6 games, we should say thanks but cheerio.

American Saint. Now THAT is what you call a balanced view. Spot on.

And I agree with what Ralph was trying to do with the Diallo sub, but why disrupt two things when one is bad enough, especially by bringing back on a player who had been rightly rested and who was not on great form. I realise that I am banging on about this sub, but I think it might be the straw that broke the camel's back for me when it comes to Ralph and his tactical failures.

ElijahK. As I said, it doesn't matter how good Redmond or Minamino would have been, bringing either of them would not have disrupted the midfield. Losing Danny already weakened the forward line. Bringing on Diallo meant that Ralph weakened the midfield too!

I agree that our squad is thin. I've been saying this for months - down to Gao's lack of spending. But that doesn't mean that Ralph has to sabotage things even more.

ElijahK: He had Redmond, Minamino and N'Lundulu on the bench, all of whom could have replaced Danny.

They might not have been very good, but the point is it wouldn't have completely messed up the midfield too.

And it would have kept Diallo on the bench, which is where he needs to be for a while.

Southampton At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
at 10:28:49

There's merit in having a glass half full attitude but when discussing what's going on, this is a forum for discussion not a PR outlet, so there's nothing wrong with a few home truths either.

We played really well first half and I think that was because we were doing something different with different players - particularly Tella and Salisu - given a go.

The game turned on the Diallo sub. It was just stupid. Can't describe it any other way. It completely screwed up the midfield and it introduced back into the team someone who hasn't been playing well of late. There were much simpler like for like swaps available for Danny. It's no surprise that it only took them 3 mins to equalise from there.

The substitution error was compounded by bringing on Djenepo. He is not a good player, he offers very little in attack and defensively he is energetic but clumsy. Ultimately he cost us the game. Again, there were other options off the bench.

I really liked Ralph when he arrived. His enthusiasm and the way he connected with the crowd we great. And he seemed to get the most out of some of the players.

But his lack of tactical nowse is now undeniable. There were question marks about it when Danny Rohl left and they have returned in spades. I now see 2020 as the exception - the way we have played in 2021 reflects something fundamentally wrong. The squad is very thin because Gao cannot spend any money, and maybe Ralph is doing some things right with these players, but overall he is looking increasingly like he is missing some basic skills necessary to succeed as a manager long term.

Southampton V Tottenham Hotspur The Preview

Let's give Diallo a rest and Jankewitz another chance, with Armstrong alongside him and Minamino and JWP wider.

I'd try Redmond and Adams in front, with Danny off the bench.

At least 4 changes from Sunday I reckon.
