Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict
at 13:52:59

All our passes looked off for the first 25 minutes or so. Whether this was fatigue or the conditions, which were appalling, I don't know.

Arsenal played well. I think the 3-1 slightly flatters them. The third goal was helped by a bit of gamesmanship. Saints switched off after a long delay and Arsenal took advantage.

Valery and Vokins looked their age. I thought Vokins did better in the second half.

I agree with the comments on Theo. He has all the gifts just needs work on his final ball. We have several of those players tho and at his age will he?

Diallo and Armstrong were excellent and probably our best players on the night. Although Diallo was slightly wrong footed for the third goal. It was just after he had switched positions though.

Ings, Ward Prowse and Adams all had off nights. Ings and Adams produce some great passes and excellent runs but they have to start scoring goals. Ward Prowse seemed to pass everything backwards last night.

At midway in the season with 29 points I can't be too disappointed overall. Games like these happen. I am convinced when the injury crisis is over we will bounce back.

I agree the commentary was very partisan. Increasingly the neutral stance is being abandoned to create 'drama'. This just seems to encourage the delivery of lazy anecdotes rather than any research being put in. Hey ho that's what the volume control is there for.
Southampton V Arsenal The Preview
at 12:15:03

We cannot really rely on the defence keeping a clean sheet every game. Given their lack of recent game time I'm unconvinced that Ralph will play both Valery and Vokins. I could see Diallo play at LB.

Our midfield looks more settled and should be a strength. With Redmond to come back in we should do well in getting the ball and turning Arsenal.

For me, the key to getting something from this game will be converting our chances. We really need Ings and Adams to get their scoring boots on again.

Alex McCarthy Or Fraser Forster Is Becoming A Nice Problem To Have For Ralph
at 13:11:46

If Forster is over the jitters then he's a great player to have available. Both he an McCarthy can push each other on and having a great back up will give the team extra confidence. Agreed that McCarthy looks more comfortable as a modern day 'Keeper sweeper' but he has taken a while to get there.

I think it's a great bit of man management for Ralph to say that the Jersey is his for duration of the FA cup. Gives him a clear role.
Southampton V Arsenal The FA Cup Verdict
at 15:47:22

Big club bias seems to be getting worse. As you say the commentary was all about Arsenal for virtually the whole game. Keown even admitted on air that he hadn't read anything of the prep on the game. Speaks volumes about his professionalism and a pretty shameful admission. Obviously just there as an Arsenal cheerleader.

Based on this performance roll on Tuesday.

Social Media Driving Danny Ings Transfer Rumour Madness
at 12:00:53

I think the problem is there is very little transfer activity atm so it's basically silly season as journalists magnify any story for clicks. If you can put Liverpool, MU, Arsenal, Spurs in a single story...imagine the worldwide audience you can hit.
Why Southampton Want To Win Against Arsenal In The FA Cup
at 12:08:30

I think you play the set PL side to try to win this. AM in goal, RB at left back (he's out next game anyway). If OR is still not fit ID to continue, DN deserves a start up front. TW should come back in midfield,as this game seems to give him a fire in his belly.

I agree if fit DI on the bench. He can always come on for the second half if we aren't creating much up front.

Shane Long's problem is a difficult one. He isn't getting much game time to get himself up to speed. He seems to need to play regularly to play at his best. But he isn't playing well enough to get more game time. A Catch 22 that only means others move in front of him.
These Foolish Ings. The Rumour Mill Goes Into Overdrive About Danny !
at 11:19:08

If he won't sign, he'll be sold in the summer. Unfortunately richer clubs seem to have an unwritten 'do not compete with one another' policy on domestic transfers.

To my eyes it reeks of being off to Tottenham for £15 million in the summer. He'll be into the last year of his contract almost 30 and Levy won't miss a trick. I really hope I am wrong.

However, if he cost us a net £5 million plus a loan fee and his wages for the 3 years here, that seems a pretty good deal even in that worst case scenario.

Southampton V Shrewsbury Town The Preview
at 11:31:44

IMO Valery looks a better winger than a full back. He's great going forwards. If he plays there tonight, I hope he takes his chance. With both Redmond and Djenepo out, there is a definite role he could take on.
Long Term Injury List Grows As Southampton Boss Hasenhuttl Gives Update
at 10:03:49

Elephant in the room time. A high intensity pressing game and the associated training that goes with it is more likely to give rise to more frequent injuries.

If access to the full medical and recuperation facilities have been restricted then a steady build up of injured players was always more likely to occur?

Southampton Change Kit Suppliers For 2021/22 Season
at 11:32:52

Come on the Pinks!, as I heard someone shout back in the day.

A red and white striped version using the same template as the current Everton kit would be quite acceptable

If we are recycling kit manufacturers, I just hope we don't go back to those bizarre Pony 'tick' shirts in a few years time.
FA Cup Postponement Could Be A Blessing In Disguise For Southampton
at 10:22:42

Sooner the FA wake up and smell the coffee and give Saints a bye the better. Use this as a warning to other sides to keep proper covid controls in place.

To sweeten the pill they could televise the next round Saints game and give Shrewsbury the FA's share of the TV money.
Queens Park Rangers Set To Bid For Josh Sims
at 11:11:40

Like the above comments, I am a bit surprised that he seems to have been overlooked. It used to be a shot in the arm when he would come on. Someone to run at defences and chase balls knocked into space.

However, if for whatever reason it isn't going to work out at Saints for him, with football being such a short career it's time for him to move on.

Prior to injury, he was showing what he could do at Doncaster, so I'm not surprised that other clubs are interested.
Should Southampton Bring Calum Chambers Back To St Mary's
at 23:38:21

Players on loan need to play regularly. As he would be a reserve, admittedly for two positions, I am not sure he would get enough game time. However, I could have said that about Theo and look how that turned out!
Southampton V Liverpool The Verdict
at 10:40:54

Agree with virtually all the above.

Diallo looks awesome. Just needs to adapt to the speed of the PL and stop getting bumped of the ball occasionally. However his possession and final balls are excellent. Will give us a real plan B with OR and JWP to start games tight or game manage in the later stages.

Great to see JS and FF return and show their true quality. Great performances from both of them.

Finally after the release of emotions on the sideline, could you love Ralph any more?. I hope he is given full backing and stays with us for many years. I am certain that he can get the success that he has earned with this team if he is given time.

Great day to be a Saints fan

Saints V West Ham United The Verdict
at 12:18:19

This is a fair review. I'm not panicking as we have picked points up while not playing well. Rather than steadily accumulating points we seem to go on points binges and then switch off for a few games. Hopefully this is one of those fallow periods.

However we do not have a plan B. Indeed, we only really seem to have a plan AA which only functions when we have the right people in peak condition. Whether this will be enough in a league where teams analyse other teams and learn quickly how to neutralise advantages who knows?

Is it just a case of Ings getting back on target and that raises the rest of the team back up again?

We are in a great position and 60%-70% of the team are playing consistently well. Just need that extra improvement to make a real difference to our results. Hopefully it will come soon.

Happy New Year to everyone on TUI.

Ralph Hasenhuttl To Miss West Ham Game Due To Self Isolating.
at 17:19:16

Hopefully they can hook the speakerphone up to the PA system so Ralph can bellow at them from home. I pity his poor neighbours.

Ings In Contention For West Ham Game
at 10:08:15

Same with Antonio, how much if this is smoke mirrors and mind games we won't really know until tonight.
Saints Need To Sign Central Defender In January Window
at 18:32:58

I don't think there will be a new recruit. There are other priorities plus it would take any new recruit weeks to get up to speed. By which time JV would be back. Why would we then want 3 reserves sat on the bench for 2 positions. Teams operate with non first choices and players out of position all the time.

Having been blown away by his performances this year, I wish JV had been given longer to settle in rather than being played straight away. So waiting to get Salisu fully up to speed doesn't raise any suspicions for me. Just need to hold our nerve a bit longer.

Hasenhuttl Reveals Vestergaard Injury Worse Than First Thought
at 18:38:51

Stephens is the logical choice without Romeu in a cover position. I expect Salisu will start to get some game time soon but I expect it will be off the bench rather than as a starter.
Saints At Fulham The Verdict
at 16:57:09

I thought Fulham played well. They were aggressive closed us down quickly. Bumped Diallo and KWP off the ball quite effectively. Pressed us. I would be surprised if they don't pick up points if they play every week like that. Luckily they didn't have much of a cutting edge.

Facing them this was a rejigged Saints with 4 enforced changes. Diallo improved over the game and has probably learnt a great deal from his first full game. I also thought Long was anonymous in the first half but then he almost scored. Perhaps he also needs a few games to get his eye back in?

We had the better chances to win, the penalty for handball should probably have been given. However it just didn't quite happen.

However if you are of a certain vintage for many seasons we could barely buy a point away from home so an unbeaten run of 7 away games and s clean sheet is a pretty good way to finish the year.

Now COYR to see out the year with a win!
