How do we choose players to buy?
at 03:12 18 Apr 2013

I agree, overall the balance of the summer transfers was good. Also, I disagree with those that say we didn't reinforce in key areas. I think the club is doing well with Cortese. I just don't think there is a clear objective in transfer policy.

Gazza is an understudy with potential, but if there were concerns whether Kelvin would be good enough in the PL, we were left exposed there. Boruc, although good now, was brought in as an urgent replacement, but was so unfit it took a couple of months before he was ready. To me an example, of buying the name, not checking out a player before purchasing.

Mayuka, a gample at 4M. Having already bought Rodriguez, and having Ricky and Sharp, we didn't need another forwward. I just don't see the point of the gamble.

Forren, we did need a CB, but it seems that he was unfit when he arrived, and neither Adkins or MP rate him. Still playing for Norway, but can't get in our team. Yes, our 3 CBs have improved under MP, but don't exactly inspire confidence. But yes, they are doing OK for now, so why buy Forren?

I am a little sceptical about transfer policy. We seem to be chasing players in Italy, and many of them over 10M. Did we really need another midfielder (Coutinho)? I would expect with the change of manager and the backroom staff, we would be using their knowledge of La Liga, and we would be bringing in quality Spanish players a lot cheaper than the prices quoted in Italy. I guess we will find out in a few months.

That's not the original point. It's not about Ramirez, it's who is dictating our transfer policy.

Why not forget your purile behaviour and name calling for a while, and add something constructive FFS

No doubt the kids got talent, but he was unproven in the Premier League, has turned out to be injuy prone, can rarely play more than 65 minutes, on the bench for away games, too similar to Lallana, and I would say not what we needed for a record transfer fee at the start of our return to the PL.

So the point of the post, we spent 20M on three players, two that don't play, and one that has played about 50% of the time.

Doesn't appear to be a plan when planning transfers.

Thanks for putting me straight. We woz robbed. I see why you think Rupert didn't do a good job. Hopefully Cortese will do better with Shaw and those on the conveyor belt to come.

I would rather keep Shaw for more than a couple of years, but on past evidence we will need to do better than before to hold on to him.

Pat, I know there was concern about the way Walcott left, but I thought we got 12 million for him, although just under alf was staged according to appearences for Arsenal and England (did they ever pay up) . In retrospect that doesnt seem too bad as he was recently valued at only 20 million. Maybe you can set me straight with the details.

Exactly my point - by leaving up to the referees interpretation gives them too much influence in the result of the game. Hence home bias, big team v small team bias, and even the nefarious influence of brown bags of cash in the changing room.

Saints At Newcastle The Preview
at 17:16 23 Feb 2013

We have every chance of getting something out of this game. Must continue to be positive. We are down the lower reaches of the league due to our form in the first 10 games or so. Since then we have improved considerably, and most of the players have responded and are capable PL players. MoPo's tactics have helped in this respect.

Earlier in the season, we would rest Lambert (or sub him) and set up defensively and invite the opposition to attack (either from the outset, or when we had the lead). Our defenders were not good enough to withstand constant pressure, particularly at the end of games. Now, by pressing high up the pitch, our defense is not subjected to such pressure.

The excuse that we have only beaten teams at the bottom of the table no longer holds true after the last match, where we were also able to hold onto a lead, and do so fairly comfortably.

Positivity for tomorrow. After all Newcastle are below us in the league, and we are a better team than them on recent form. Hopefully they will be tired after the European excursion.

Will we get 1 or 3 points, that will come down to the intangibles like the forwards taking their chances, the defenders not making costly mistakes, and the referee.

Team wise, I would stick with what has been working, although wouldn't play both Ramirez and Puncheon from the start.

While selling the older players in the late stages of their career, to replace them with younger ones might seem prudent. Not in this case. Rickie is the top scoring Englishman in the PL, and is only 31. He should be good for at least another 2 years.

Not only are there his goals. There is also his penalty taking, and he has often looked our most accomplished play maker. He is not just a front man to target. He drops deep, has good movement, and plays intelligent balls. His lack of pace is compensated by his other assets. Will be be past it in one or two years. I doubt it, maybe a little slower and injury prone.

Why sell him to WHU now. Obviously Fat Sam thinks he can play in the PL for 2 or 3 years. How much will he go for, maybe 4-5M? What would a replacement cost. Mayuka cost that, and is nowhere near filling RLs shoes.

I say we would be foolish to sell him now. Maybe in a couple of years, and then there will be a Championship club ready to pay more than what he cost.

The link shows a table that is out-of-date (after 20 games), but I couldn't find a later one either. Not sure if there is any change lately, as we are still not getting a lot of bookings.

Does the winner of the Fair Play League get a European spot still?

Maybe this is what Cortese meant by getting Saints into European contenders!!

Reasons to be Cheerful - Part 1

Fair points, and obviously it was a learning process for all. The team and Adkins were showing a good improvement up until the sacking, but I still think the outlook is a lot brighter now. The new styple of play has brought out the best in the players, and the managers positive attitude helps.

Nick, I stand corrected about the goals conceeded. I guess the other teams have caught up lately.

I still consider NA as a manager with some PL experience, but not a PL manager, when posters state that he should replace Lambert at AV I am a little sceptical that everyone would be in agreement with that.

Also, while MP has no experience with the PL, it doesn't mean that he would be incapable of doing a good job. Only time will tell. On NC's head it rests.

Sorry to bore you with so many posts. But, it seems that most of the posters here are only capable of one liners, so to do anything more than a paragraph is exceeding expectations that they will be read. Its easy to slag off posts, but if you want to discuss, sometimes it takes a little more (posts or length of post - hopefully I divided into reasonable topics).
