On This Day In History 29th March Part 2
at 12:47:28

I was at that game in 1980 too. You forgot to mention who the opposition was. It was Norwich. Earlier that month, we saw Jimmy Greaves play his only game in a Saints shirt v Vancouver Whitecaps.

The rejection of our new stadium plans may have had something to do with the fact that the city council at the time was headed by John Deacon, who also happened to be the chairman of Portsmouth Football Club, after having been turned down for a place on the board at Southampton FC.

On This Day In History 29th March Part 1

Yes, I was at that game too, Nick. I don't remember much 'baying for blood'; just a drab game of football. I preferred the next three away trips to Fulham, Luton and Orient a lot more though. We had a massive away following back then and in those last 3 games outnumbered the home fans.

On This Day In History 16th March Part 1
at 10:00:11

How can any Saints fan who was there forget 16 March, 1977, when we beat Anderlecht 2-1 in the European Cup Winners' Cup Quarter-Final?? That was, admittedly, a very bittersweet night, as at 2-0, the crowd at the Dell were going wild as we were going through to the semi-finals, only for Van der Elst to score a late goal.

Saints Rumoured To Be Up For Sale

It's going to be very difficult for him to sell as Kat is going to be a massive stumbling block. She'll either want to keep her 20% or charge a disproportionate amount for it. That will put potential buyers off.

Spurs Trip Now Sold Out
at 20:43:25

The 13,000 to Nottingham Forest on this day (29 January) in 1977 was probably our biggest away following for a 4th rd FA Cup tie.

If we'd demanded the same percentage allocation that we gave Spurs at St Mary's, we could have 9,000 had fans there on Wednesday night.

All Change At Right Back For Saints
at 19:49:14

Arsenal are paying less than 1 million for him, whereas our results when Cedric hasn't been in our team indicate his loss is going to cost the club millions of pounds in lost league place money. So, no it's not sensible at all.

Just to highlight how bad we are without Cedric, we haven't won a single league game this season when he wasn't in the team

For those who don't realize just how important Cedric is to our team, just look at our results this season when Cedric didn't play, including the 0-3 opening day defeat to Burnley, the 1-4 home defeat to Chelsea and the 0-9 defeat to Leicester. Without him,our defence seems to fall apart.

All Change At Right Back For Saints

Kat and Gao really are desperate for cash if they are prepared to let a first team regular go mid-season. They don't care whether they are jeopardising our chances of a good league position, possibly even Europa League, and a cup final in the second half of the season as they feel we are no longer threatened with relegation, but without our regular right back, we might be.

W;aker-Peters is a young, untried player, currently 4th choice at Spurs, who might be a good prospect for the future but not at the cost of losing a top class first team regular like Cedric.

Can Saints Challenge For A European Spot ?
at 15:12:39

The same people who were moaning that it was impossible for any other team to challenge the big six are now moaning that it's a poor quality league because any team can.

It is, in fact, the best league in the world with the best teams and players it has ever had. The top team are the European and World Club Champions. The Champions League Final was contested by 2 Premier League teams and you'd take every team in the Premier League to beat the team in the same position in any other league in the world.

So, the Premier League is the strongest league in the world, we are 9th in it and have a chance of finishing 5th and that's a good thing.

Three Wins From Safety

Saints are currently 25/1 10th favourites for relegation and 13/8 to finish in the top 10.

Of more interest is how many more points we need to secure our 5th top 8 finish in 7 years.

Three Wins From Safety

Next season will be Saints' 44th in the top flight in 54 years and I have witnessed all of them, right back to our first ever game in the top flight, v Man City. A highlight of that first top flight season was seeing Saints beat West Ham's 'World Cup winning team', including Moore, Hurst & Peters, 6-2.

For comparison, Pompey spent a total of 33 seasons in the top flight, most of them more than 70 years ago and even I wasn't born then.

Season Ticket Holders Get A Great Price For Spurs FA Cup Tickets
at 14:44:21

Yes, 5,200 Spurs fans being given the whole of the Northam end and paying just £10 each. We've never been quite this generous to away fans before. Why start now??? Is the ticket office manager a big Spurs fan?

Meanwhile the ticket office is taking the smallest possible away allocations for London games, preventing thousands of Saints fans from buying tickets.

Perhaps it's time to start a campaign: #MoreTicketsforSaintsFans

Forget Full Backs It's A Central Defender We Need !
at 19:33:30

Stephens and Bednarek are the best young pair of centre backs in the country, and Ralph knows it, which is why he is not looking for a central defender. But, it would be good if we could get rid of Vestergaard and bring in a replacement as cover in case either Stephens or Bednarek get injured.

Saints At Chelsea The Verdict
at 19:09:51

Another great performance at Stamford Bridge. It's amazing how many time we've won there by 2 goals or more. In contrast, little Pompey haven't beaten Chelsea home or away for 60 years.

Our young British players, Stephens, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong, Redmond, Obafemi etc are all improving together and developing a terrific team spirit. Credit to Ralph, the manager who has inspired them. That 2nd goal today was one of the best team goals scored in the Premier League.

Saints At Aston Villa The Verdict

With players like Ings and Stephens we are developing a nucleus of players who are really happy to be playing for our club and for whom a Saints win is more important than a payday. We are getting a Southampton team identity back again and the fans are now beginning to respond to it.
