I expect to get pelters for this but here goes. I didn’t attend at St Mary’s yesterday due to health issues but did listen on Solent. From what I could gather, up and until our new boy scored it was a mediocre display at best which was heading for a goalless draw. On the basis of one glorious header we now have every man and his dog suggesting we can sneak into the playoffs, which of course I hope we do. However, before we all get too excited, please let’s not forget that this is The Saints, who are just as likely to get done by relegation threatened Leicester on Tuesday evening, it being their first home game after a six point deduction. It’s the hope that kills you as my sixty years of support have taught me. |

Our historical form against Watford is excellent. According to 11v11, since 2016 in all competitions we have played them seventeen times and lost only twice. We should have enough to beat them, but fail to do so and any of us who still think we are a top six team ( I don’t ) can start to look forward to another bubble fixture next season. |

For all his rather different appearance particularly hair ( or lack of ) wise, Jimmy was a damn good footballer. You don’t get a Division Two champions medal and a Division One champions medal with Liverpool unless you can play a bit. He got both in 61/62 and 63/64 respectively. He was also a very important part of the team that finally got us promoted to the promised land of the top flight for the very first time in 65/66. What he possessed was a wonderful footballing brain that enabled him to pick a pass beautifully. If ever the expression “ Don’t judge a book by its cover “ applies, it most definitely was Jimmy. In his prime, I’d have him in our current team as the first name on the team sheet, he really was that good. [Post edited 5 Feb 18:05]

Having another fun night for him in Manchester with three put by him already. For a player with such a high reputation has he actually ever won anything ? Then again I believe he does hold the record of being relegated from The Premier League whilst between the sticks with three different clubs. Sheffield Utd, Bournemouth and ourselves. |

Well put as usual Southamptonfan. My sentiments to a tee. Nick and I have a history of disagreement on numerous subjects concerning the Saints. However on this topic he is entirely correct. In between doing other things, I watched bits and pieces of Arsenal v Chelsea yesterday evening. A throughly boring exhibition of sterile sideways and backward passing which if continued will ultimately kill the game for the majority of UK fans. |

B B C show all The Championship K Os as one minute pass what is usual. Not so however for The Premier League apparently. |

Genuine question Nick. Are you surprised ? |

And so the decline continues with our club under the control of the current owners and their employees at Sports Republic. Another window passes since Ings left and still we haven’t got a proven goal scorer. In fact exactly the opposite assuming that Armstrong has in fact been transferred to Wolves this evening. Any realistic chance of a top six finish passed months ago so at best it’s mid table mediocrity from here on in. Given that it’s evident that a large number of season ticket holders can’t be bothered to occupy the seats they have already paid for this season, it’s going to be interesting come the summer when it’s renewal time. If the current owners remain in place we are destined to become the new Preston North End or Stoke City, just another under achieving, under supported, club that most people don’t even realise or care exists. |

So, if the rumours are correct we are selling a guy who is currently joint third in the league of Championship scorers to Wolves ( who we will be playing next season when they are relegated) for £7 million and replacing him with a 30 year old no hoper who nobody has ever heard of ? Unless this is a ploy to boost the Balance Sheet before selling our club what on earth are the Loons doing it for ? Putting a positive spin on this one for Sports Republic may well be beyond even Nick’s undoubted abilities 😇 [Post edited 1 Feb 16:41]

Well done Nick, you deserve all the hits and like yourself I can’t believe that it’s 38 years since I purchased my first copy outside The Dell. It’s a credit to you and 99.9% of the contributors to the site that it hasn’t ever descended into any personal rancour even when discussing politics and current affairs. Personally, I think that on occasions you talk absolute rubbish and I’m certain that you think the same of me but that’s just part of the fun. Long may you continue Sir. |

If it helps Southamptonfan, I’ve no idea either as to why it appears that Nick feels the way he does about Sports Republic. It’s almost as if he has become one of the Yorkshire Men in the famous Monty Python sketch, You were lucky etc etc. Then again, it’s his site and he’s entitled to his opinions just like the rest of us . |

Preaching to the converted I appreciate Southamptonfan but it’s not strange. We both know the answer but for those who still doubt :- We were an established team in The Premier League and had been for a good number of seasons before Sports Republic arrived. Since then, two relegations in three seasons, seven managers in two years and currently 15th in The Championship. Incidentally, with Derby winning this evening, should we lose at Stoke tomorrow we will be a minimum of eight points adrift of the sixth placed team. Probably more depending on other team’s results. And to think that before a ball was kicked we were 5/2 second favourites to win the league this season. |

I didn’t go to that game but imagine I must now be one of the few contributors to the ugly who witnessed the last time we won there in the league, fifty years ago in 1976. If memory serves, it was a mid week game shortly before either the F A Cup Semi or Final and Lawrie sidelined some of our better players who had been naughty. What they had done wrong I can’t remember. Anyhow, we played a weakened team and it was a dreadful game. Micky Channon scored a very late winner and I didn’t even see it,having decided to walk back to the station early to avoid any problem. The skates weren’t happy and decided to throw whatever they could find at the train as it left. Half a century later and now it’s bubble time. [Post edited 28 Jan 21:46]

If you think our current squad is now capable of promotion even with a few additions, I respectfully suggest that you get down to Bet Fred. We are now 12/1 against being promoted having been 5/2 to win the league outright at the start of the season. As for Aribo and Edozie. What would you do if your not selected to play but allegedly in the case of Aribo are paid £70,000 a week. Demand a transfer ? I think not. |

Possibly, but neither were winning goals against a team that a couple of seasons previously had won the F A Cup when winning it really mattered. |
