Whitbread For St Mary's ?
Whitbread For St Mary's ?

Not a story about how the massive former brewing company are about to buy Saints but whether Norwich City centre half Zak Whitbread could be on his way to Southampton.

The rumour mill is linking Norwich City central defender Zak Whitbread with a move to several Premier Clubs including Saints, it could be attractive to Saints for several reasons, firstly he is a player right in the mould that Saints need and secondly he is available on a bosnan free being out of contract at Carrow Road.

In a little over 2 years with the Canaries after joining from Millwall Whitbread has played only 39(5) games for Norwich in the league, well under half of the total he could have featured in, although it has to be said his time in East Anglia has been blighted by injury, including this season, where although he has made 21 Premier appearances, he barely played before December but formed a good partnership for a period before losing his place to injury in March.

His lack of game time has obviosly meant that he isnt first choice at Carrow Road and with his contract up in the summer it has alerted clus to the fact that he could be looking for a move to a club that can offer him first team football.

Now 28 and originally starting at Liverpool he moved to Millwall where he spen the best part of five years before heading to Norfolk in January 2010, with Saints needing the strengthen in the centre of defence he could offer a good option and he is certainly in the mould of player that Saints will need to look for if they are to improve the squad wisely in the summer and not go in for silly signings at inflated wages and prices, Whitbread on the surface has the right blend of experience and hunger to achieve with the only question being his injury record over the years.

Mate who's a Norwich fan and whose opinion I respect doesn't rate him at all so hope we steer well clear!

Nick, without seeing him play on a regular basis, how can you say he is 'right in the mould that Saints need'? I would be corcerned that he is 'blighted by injury'. We have had that with Holmes and Connelly.

I know nothing of the player's ability, but a lengthy period of injury doesn't bode well, especially when you consider what happened with M Svensson. We ideally need someone who is fit and able to fit straight into a first team if required. Plus if he's not good enough for Norwich..

whatsforpud, a mould isnt the finished or even quality article, all I can say about him is he ticks the boxes of some of what Saints need, I know nothing about his playing ability, which is why I said he fits the mould and not that he is ideal or perfect for Saints

Always weary of players from Norwich the previous three, Darren Kenton, Jon Otsemabor and Jim Brennan weren't exactly the best calibre
