Dyer Wanting To Fight For Place

There are probably a reasonable number of people who are surprised that Nathan Dyer is still at the club as we come within three days of the season opener at Chelsea.

Dyer was widely predicted to be on his way this summer but he is still at Swansea and very much part of the manager’s plans as he puts the final touches to his preparations for the new Premier League season.

And whilst the Swans may have the likes of Andre Ayew and Modou Barrow competing for the spot that was Nathan’s for so long the winger is determined that he will have his fair share of appearances this season as he looks towards his 5th Premier League season with the club.

Dyer made 37 appearances last season but many of them were off the bench as he lost form during the season after an impressive start that saw him link well with the returning Gylfi Sigurdsson.

It is another example of how quick things can change in football but rather than letting his head drop and sulking, Nathan is talking up what he wants from the new season.

“I am feeling very strong,” Dyer declares.

“I worked hard during the off-season.

“I am sharp, I am strong and I am waiting for my opportunity to show I am the same flying machine that I can be.

“It is a numbers game – there is strength in each position.

“But I am hoping I can chip in with a few goals and get my games.

“I have a goal target in mind and that is what I will work towards.

“I welcome the competition, competition is healthy and important to drive players on.
“There are two or three players for each position and that has added an edge to training.
“You know you will miss out sometimes, but that is football.

“You have to keep your head down and keep going.”

The good news for Swans fans is that a fit and ready Nathan Dyer will be good news for us and even if he used as an option off the bench to change things or when defenders are tiring then it is far better than many of the options we have had over the past four years.

And with the competition strong then any chance given to Nathan will be one that he wants to grab with both hands and that has to be a positive for us as well.

We’re glad you stayed Nathan!
