Molineux, Wolves - Travel Guide
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2015 18:06 by Clive Whittingham

QPR’s second away game of the Championship season is a tough midweek assignment at Wolves on Wednesday August 19.

Ground Name: Molineux

Capacity: 28 300 (all seated)

Address: Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton, WV1 4QR

Main Telephone No: 0870 441 0123

Ticket Office: AS ABOVE

By Car

It’s a 130 mile trip this one, up the M40 and M5 or the M1 and M6 depending on what part of London you are travelling from. If you go up the M6 then leave at Junction 10 and travel into Wolverhampton on the A454. When you reach the ring road turn right and then at the second set of lights look for signs for football parking or continue to follow the road round and look for the ground on the right. If you go the other way follow the M40 onto the M42 and then the M5 south of Birmingham. Head north on the M5 to Junction 2 after Frackley Services then take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A4123. Follow that for the best part of eight miles into the middle of Wolverhampton then turn right onto the A4150 Wolverhampton ring road which should bring you around to the ground. Speed cameras all over the shop.

Parking

Limited parking all over the place, it's a bit of a poor place for a football match actually this. There is limited parking at the ground, follow directions above, failing that inside the ring road in the city centre there are numerous pay and displays including one at the city hall.

By Train

Despite it being midweek, there is a train back after this — 22.45 from Wolverhampton arrives into Euston at 01.15. Advance single tickets as low as £7.50 are available currently on the Virgin Trains website.

Earlier in the day fares are already up between £50 and £68 for a single. There are £26.80 fares available at 13.43 and 14.23 out of Euston arriving 15.37 and 16.14. Chiltern Railways from Marylebone to Snow Hill in Birmingham currently have tickets at all times of the afternoon for £6 single if you want to save some cash.

The ground is easily walkable from the station. You can either leave the station and walk straight towards the city centre then when you reach the inner ring road turn right and walk around until you come to the ground. Failing that follow the covered walkway towards the city centre, walk past the Varsity pub and then go under the subway under the ring road to the ground. Some like to avoid the subway on high profile match days, it has been a bit tasty in the past. Ten or fifteen minutes top whack.

By Coach

The official club coach leaves Loftus Road at 15.00 and the Target Roundabout at 15.30. It’s priced £26 adults, £16 for disabled, over 60s and under 21s and £14 for under 16s with the usual discount for season ticket holders.

Where to drink

The Great Western behind the station is in the guide - real ale and all that - but Wolverhampton is notoriously unfriendly for away fans looking to give the local pubs some money. Most will have bouncers on match days checking which stands your tickets are in and forbidding entry if you look like you might be an away fan. Whether that will be relaxed on a midweek night we’ll see. The Stonehouse is often the designated away pub. There’s also a bar behind the railway station that’s part of the Premier Inn which wasn’t nearly as bad as that sounds when we tried it after our last visit.

For those going into Birmingham and out again on the train I'd advise drinking there and heading out late. The Wellington is very close by and has a massive selection of beers, lagers and ales on sale.

Match Tickets

Tickets are on sale now to supporters with 100 loyalty points priced £28 adults, £15 for over 65s and under 21s, £12 for under 17s and £10 for under 10s.
