I suspect it’s just me, but every time I see “Uncle Tony” in relation to TF, I think of a bloke — probably in the 1970’s — handing out sweets or comics in exchange for “special cuddles” on a soiled mattress. But like I say, that could just be me.

I don't take the term literally. I think it's more of an Uncle-through-marriage kind of set up. Which is handy, because that way we're not obliged to send him birthday cards, or to loan him money.

There is a reason for the Uncle monika....

In Malaysia it is accepted that a younger person, when referring to a man of middle age or above, who they don't know, they call Uncle

In England you might say, excuse me sir/mate. In Malaysia they would say excuse me Uncle.

I have lived here for 8 years and many 'locals' have referred to me as Uncle. It is the accepted polite way to refer to someone you do not know.

And if you know his name but again you are not personally familiar with the person, you would call them, Uncle xxxxxx

Hence - "Uncle" Tony.
