What a horrible looking place when you drive past it.

There was a big grass open space square in the middle where you could see the other buildings around like the hall and tower but they have just stuck an awful looking building on it.

New campus opportunity ruined by awful design and planning.

The buildings are ugly, as are the Amazon building, and the film studios.
Not a nice entry into a City.

Most universities are dependent on overseas students now. It will undoubtedly end in tears. I know one university at least needed baling out. I’d be astonished if quite a few don’t go to the wall over the next 5 years, one way or another.

Agree entirely (and I work there). A small point though, the building they built that blocks the view to the Great Hall is the least “awful looking building” on the campus, Great Hall aside arguably. (EU funded too, just to ram home how important being in the EU is to this area).

But otherwise, spot on. It’s a windswept, bleak campus, with a pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap feel to it. They needed to incorporate much more space, but economics has driven it. Which is kind of understandable, if sad. Opportunity missed imo.

You mean the good old British taxpayers for funding it all.

Not the main campus, no. Although they got a good chunk of EU Development Bank loan in addition to the land from BP (who also cleaned it up).

If you have a world class business then people will want to come.

Far more sustainable than solely focusing on UK based students. Limited number there and other uni’s would be competing.
No - a global model is far more flexible with the potential for future growth.

Of course they need to be run as a business, but Swansea can grow further.

God bless the EU.

A global model is the way (like it or not) since student fees were introduced as the main way of funding Unis. Or since they were privatised, in other words.

It’s not easy when the Government has a Goebbels-esque immigration policy though. It does make it harder to attract overseas students, especially those from the EU recently.

Students love it there.

Lots of Chinese investment going on in Swansea atm, not sure if that's anything to do with extra Chinese students here...

Apparently, another 7-8 years worth of construction until they've finished in that area, great for Swansea imo

You're missing the fact that the coffers used by the EU are provided by the British taxpayers .We're probably paying for roads in Bulgaria and other projects in far flung European enclaves as well.

Some other countries contribute as well. We, in Swansea get a LOT back in what used to be called Objective 1. We get it because we are cripplingly low on growth because we get no investment from Westminster.

You’re wasting your time. They completely miss the point that by the Union helping to improve countries within it, it means we get benefits too, like an increase in EU students (to keep it relevant to this thread). We (SU) are having a push on Romania lately as opportunities start to open up for people over there, for example. Or we were anyway; not sure how that’ll pan out after January. It’s a global market for students; anything changes that make it more difficult for people to come here or make us less appealing hurts us.

On a more serious note whole blocks of student accom in Cardiff has been reserved/given to just Chinese students.

I read somewhere that they were struggling to fill a lot of the student accommodation in Cardiff. Just hope Swansea doesn't have the same problem as blocks going up everywhere.

Leaving aside the issue of aesthetics, there are some contentious claims on this thread. Funding for the Bay Campus comes from a mix of sources, and loans as well as grants. Funding channeled through EU schemes is very significant, but many posters steadfastly refuse to understand what the UK's status as a net contributor means. Although some UK universities do receive large numbers of students from EU countries their financial importance to Swansea University is much less than that of non-EU overseas students. The HESA figures for 2017-18 show the University had 16,765 UK students, 2700 from non-EU countries, and 950 from other EU countries. EU students pay the same fees as home country students, rather than the higher fees paid by non-EU students. For example, an EU student starting a Physics undergraduate degree this year will pay £9000 p.a., while a non-EU student will pay £19,500 p.a., and the respective Ph.D. fees are £4,400 and £20,800 p.a.

On the other hand ..... fantastic to see that huge investment in the future prosperity of the area.

More students living and studying in Swansea brings many positives. The uni even sponsors the Swans of course - both kit and ground advertising.
The better the uni does then the better shirley....?

On the other hand, we could complain about the design ...?
And I am pretty sure that planning will have had a good look at things.

God bless the EU for funding it all.

The EU did not fund it. The UK taxpayers pay the EU £12 billion a year the EU returns £8 billion a year to the UK. It keeps £4 billion for it's running costs.

It is great that after 31st January the UK will decide how to spend the whole £12 billion.

If. We. Waited. For. UK. Govt. To. Fund. It. Then. It. Would. Not. Exist.

It only exists because the nice European people funded it.

There is no Brexit dividend , of course, as the uk economy will contract directly resulting in less taxes being paid.

Happy to help.
