Irrelevant to the question in hand, show the science behind closing down hospitality, not hypothetical situations.. Show me where the science is, and I wont say another word on the subject..

| Lots of fuss about pubs shutting on 16:12 - Dec 6 by exhmrc1 | If you look back at the end of August and beginning of September you will find that the cases that caused the hike were because of 3 things People bringing the virus back from holidays Then going to pubs and it spreading there People going to house parties. Absolutely clear reasons at a time when schools were shut and students hadnt come. It has escalated ever since. |
Yes "people going to house parties" is an issue so lets allow a massive Christmas house party with up to 3 families eh. Following the science my derriere!

People go out to eat and have a glass of wine or a pint, not get sh#*faced You can go to the shops once a week if you need food, you don’t need to go every day

Thank you for that, I'll be honest with you initial inspection seems to be pointing to the rise in cases to the university's.

That's not the issue though the issue is safety so they say.they say pubs are spreading it the most and like I said I feel safer in pub than supermarkets

The universities would have opened in Dublin as well. Even more so. More and larger universities in the Capital city. This just sums up what was happening in Wales before schools and universities went back. it has increased ever since at roughly double every week. the other day there were pubs closed in Ceredigion. The increase within Llanelli was centred around a number of pubs there.

I would like to see a more detailed breakdown of that data you put up, with regards to how many tests were carried out, and so on..

Approx 1/2 the universities in Ireland are in Dublin. The evidence is there. Whether you wish to accept it or not is down to you.

I'm sure that most university towns in the uk, have seen similar stats, I know I have seen many people complaining that the university opening has pushed their small town infection rate up..

| Lots of fuss about pubs shutting on 19:31 - Dec 6 with 509 views | Catullus | https://www.bmj.com/content/37 It's in the link but I took the below extract, Current test and trace policies have mainly focused on preventing spread in care homes, hospitals, and in the community.2 However, contact within households is thought to be responsible for roughly 70% of SARS-CoV-2 transmission when widespread community control measures are in place.3 In Wuhan, the reproduction number (R) dropped from 3.54 to 1.18 after lockdown and cordon sanitaire. But the epidemic was only brought under complete control when Fangcang (field) hospitals were introduced to isolate cases outside the home, with R dropping to 0.51 after two weeks. 70% spread within households.....14% in hospitality. Shut the pubs but lets have a big family Christmas. | |

The trouble is that a lot of that is false information. There was always going to be increases when students went to university. They live together in halls of residences and houses of multiple occupancy. As in any household there is a huge likelyhood of spread to others if one member of a household and that is the reason it looks so high in private homes. The major problems were we had opened up several weeks before students arrived around the 21 September. I think it was a week later in Cardiff. We had also opened up pubs on 3 August. The virus was already spreading before students arrived. On 12 August before the effect of pubs opening took place there were 8 new cases in a day in Wales. 2 weeks later there was 34 as the effect took place. On 9 September it had risen to 165 and students hadnt come yet. 2 weeks later just after the student arrived it had risen to 234 and has continued since. None of this is due to students who were not even here at the time. Aberystwyth university up to 29 November had 43 students and 2 staff with coronavirus. Places like Cardiff Met and Bangor also had low figures. Swansea and Cardiff were higher but the amount is low compared to the overall cases in Wales.

It's not if you consider the relatively small student population in an area as a whole. Although of course not all universities are the same, Aber and Bangor will attract more Welsh students as they offer Welsh language courses so they won't be importing as many infections. Overall I think back in September a student was 5 times more likely to be infected than someone else.

It isnt really surprising when you consider students live in halls of residences and houses of multiple occupancy. For example Henrefoilan Student Village is in houses of 7 with shared Kitchen and Bathroom. Highly likely when 1 gets it many others will as well. Some of the halls in the university itself have nearly 20 on 1 floor so spread is expected. Also being in the younger age group there is far more mixing so it would only be typical of the general population. Many of my age and older stay in far more often and certainly have done so since covid. Unlike you who goes out many near my age stay local to try not to catch the virus. There are examples on this on here. I spoke to a lady who lived up the street a couple of months ago. It was her first day out for about 5 months. She was walking 200 metres away to drop a card off for her great grand daughter. She was petrified of catching it. No wonder the student figures are higher than the general population. As far as the Welsh Language Swansea and I believe Cardiff both offer many courses in Welsh. Cardiff has for many years had a number of speakers and places like Llandaff have many Welsh speakers there. There are 3 Welsh speaking comprehensives in Cardiff and one of my mates taught there but sadly passed away recently. There are Welsh Bars like Clwb Ifor Bach in the city centre and the Mochyn Du certainly used to be very Welsh at one time.

Your comments regarding Aber and Bangor having more Welsh Students has proved incorrect University English Welsh Total Aberystwyth 3790 2855 8185 Bangor 4495 3985 11155 Cardiff 12860 7076 31955 Swansea 7550 9085 20415 As can be seen from these HESA figures Swansea is the only one of the 4 university that has more Welsh than English students. The total figures include overseas and other uk countries.

To be honest that just shows how much smaller the universities in Bangor and Aberystwyth are. They are half the size before you consider that Swansea and Cardiff have other institutions too.

Yes they are less than 1/2 the size but even double or triple the rates are very low in comparison to the overall student population. Your fact about them having proportionately more Welsh students is wrong also. That is not really that surprising given there are very low populations in the area and for example Aberystwth is not much different in time from Birmingham than the bulk of the Welsh population. Similarly Bangor to Liverpool and Cardiff to Bristol, the west country and even London.
