Championship squad salary table 00:43 - Apr 15 with 3615 viewsDr_Parnassus

After a discussion about how we are performing (and expectation levels) in relation to what Cooper has spent a few weeks back where it was suggested he had spent a lot of money, I created a table to show spend since he arrived and matched it up with league position.

Barnsley aside we were the best in the top half in terms of where we were vs what we spent. On that thread someone asked me to do a salary one, but didn’t have the information at hand to do it. I have since found a source which I will use for the below table which shows what we pay our squad in relation to others.

I couldn’t be bothered to type everyone in as some will obviously be below us (Luton, Wycombe, Millwall etc etc) - But have searched everyone I think would have a chance to pay more than us and the results are in:-

1. Watford 37.0m p/a
2. Bournemouth 29.9m p/a
.................................
3. Stoke 27.8m p/a
4. Cardiff 22.0m p/a
5. Norwich 21.5m p/a
6. Forest 20.2m p/a
.................................
7. Sheff Wed 19.2m p/a
8. Brentford 16.6m p/a
9. Middlesbrough 15.7m p/a (slightly higher than us)
10. Swansea 15.7m p/a
11. Derby 15.5m p/a
12. Bristol C 14.6m p/a
13. Blackburn 12.5m p/a
14. Reading 11.5m p/a

So we find ourselves in 10th position in terms of salary budget for our squad. Next season we should drop further to possibly 12th place and slot in between Blackburn and Bristol City.

In terms of what we have spent on fees since Cooper arrived (loan fees not taken into account for any club as they are notoriously hard to find), but doubtful would be enough to even take us up one place I think we found ourselves in 16th place.

To find ourselves in 3rd is something we should be extremely proud of.

Please don’t tell me you posted that with a straight face?

That’s the salary bill of our last year in the Premier League.... not last season.

Some idiot that doesn’t understand finances has more than likely lifted them from a set of accounts not realising that accounts are not a snapshot of now, but a snapshot of the past.

Our salary bill the year we came down would have been roughly 50m once we shipped the players out. The year after it would have been roughly 35m.

(Edit - I just read your link and that’s exactly what they said they did. Lifted it from 2017/18 accounts, which of course is a reflection of the year previous. It’s junk).

So this guy has just lifted his figures from any old site online and that's gospel

But fair enough, where is the wage bill from all our seasons in the Championship in comparison to other clubs.

Let's see where this is heading

Our wage bill £55m first season down?

SCFC v QPR (famous 3-0 win)

Mulder
Naughton
VdH
Rodon
Roberts
Grimes
Carroll
Celina
Byers
Baker Richardson
McBurnie

Be lucky if there's £15m on show there.

Analyse or fantasise.

It’s about common sense sunshine, anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together can see these figures will be about right. We know our income, I could have guessed our salary budget roughly without even knowing the squad simply by knowing how much revenue we make. It’s not difficult.

Makes no difference who made the pitch. It’s about who the manager has at his disposal. You are again looking through a lens of 90 mins in an 8/9 month long season.

Who on earth looks at a wage bill as the 11 on the pitch? And what point are you even trying to shoehorn anyway? That others spent more and had bigger budgets so we weren't able to get back up right away? You realise that’s MY point don’t you?

Do you even know what point you make these days or do you just look for the nearest anti Cooper or Dr P one? Have some pride.

Just to add, Potter didn't have Routledge and Dyer at his disposal for a chunk of season due to clauses in their contract which meant app bonuses. They needed to waive them before they played. Routledge said himself.

Sure, stick them on the pile.

Anyone who he genuinely didn’t have at his disposal then it makes sense to deduct.

I’m not sure to what end this is being done though. Anything that gets taken away adds weight to why it’s hard to compete in the upper echelons of this league when we don’t have the spending power of other teams who are often reckless with their money and especially their salary as a % of income.

We are far more sensible, cut our cloth accordingly and as a result have to play above our expected level in relation to our squad investment. That’s what we are doing.

Last seasons Championship wage table?

Did we under achieve then?

When a manager sits down and discusses a budget with the Board the first thing they will look at is who they want to keep or build a team around

Cooper wanted to do that with Ayew. He thought Lowe could compliment Ayew.
He had his keeper
He had his centre half
He had his full backs
He had his centre mid
He had Welsh internationals in Roberts and Cabango
He had the Best DM in the league and made him Captain
He wanted to keep notable others (Jay, Naughton, Routs)
He had promising Academy players
He wanted Celina out

I don't envy other squads some of them dealing with getting players off the books or your Boro's, Forests, Readings.

We've had the squad to win the league and probably proving that in glimpses this season.

Why are you asking the same questions, they have been answered.
