CLUB STATEMENT: Maidstone.

Statement following yesterday’s match versus Concord Rangers.

Club chief executive Bill Williams said: “I am aware of allegations on Twitter by the Concord Rangers goalkeeper that racist comments were directed at him. We are sorry and dismayed to read this.

“Let me be crystal clear — racism has no place in our game and in our society as a whole.

“If we are able to identify the culprit or culprits and I believe we’re only talking about one or two amongst a crowd of 2,000 — they will be dealt with in the strongest possible terms.

“If it was you and we’re not able to find you, let me say here and now: you’re not welcome at our ground ever again.

“If I can make one plea at this time — if anyone hears or sees anything untoward at matches, be you a player, official or supporter, please report it at that time. I fear the failure to do so on this occasion and leave it to social media a couple of hours later, will let those individuals off the hook and that is almost as sad as the incident itself.”

Concord Rangers said on Twitter: “Racism has no place in our game. Nobody should ever in any walk of life be subjected to racist abuse. Not today not tomorrow not any day.”

Clubs including Hemel Hempstead and Chippenham posted messages of support to Myles Roberts while Concord assistant boss Danny Green — the former Charlton winger — said: “On a sour note, our young goalkeeper received racist abuse this afternoon. A young man learning his trade on loan from a Premier League team, I’m absolutely gutted that this has happened.

“We will support him and stand with him every step of the way.”

More racist abuse alleged on 19:02 - Sep 15 by KeithHaynes

Short of digging a few of them up I’m stuffed then.

But I have been sent this.

The failure of the potato crop in successive years took away the staple food that sustained millions of poor people. About a million refugees fled the country at this time. Tens of thousands of these unfortunates arrived at the ports of South Wales after travelling as ballast in the holds of coal ships that returned with a human cargo from Irish ports. Many of these refugees were themselves diseased and starving, and they endured appalling conditions in these sailing ships. Journeys took days or even weeks when the weather was bad and some refugees died on board ship or succumbed shortly after landing. These were harrowing times when fearful migrants encountered an anxious and sometimes hostile population at their destination. As one commentator at Cardiff put it, the destitute newcomers arrived with nothing more than “pestilence on their backs, famine in their stomachs”. Officials in the ports did their best to deter the refugees from landing rather than welcome them. In a vain attempt to stem the flow of people, they prosecuted ship captains for carrying too many passengers.

And this -
In the year 360, a sudden series of coordinated raids by the Irish, Anglo-Saxons and Picts began. These continued as the Irish colonised the old Wales coasts. This resulted in a short period lasting until the 5th century during which Old Irish was spoken in the region: twenty stones dated to this period have ogham inscriptions.
