| Coventry City on 12:23 - Sep 25 by Chief | That along with his poor performances for us and alternatives available yes. Guehi came back a better player after his pre-season. Evidently so has Gyorkeres. Were there really many other viable options in defence than Guehi then? As I've said the circumstances dictated it was worth persisting with. We didn't have Gyorkeres for another season so that's a moot point anyway. |
Guehi has a bit fortunate that we had so many injuries in his first season. Was the only fit centre half at the club when we first went to the back 5, with Brandon Cooper having been sent out on a pointless loan to Yeovil. Cabango was the one to miss out when Guehi first arrived, with Guehi partnering Wilmot (who was just as bad in those games, maybe the worse of the pair tbh). When Rodon was fit in February we partnered him with Cabango and looked much stronger for it. Coventry signed Gyokeres for less than what we paid for Piroe, and little more than what we paid for Whittaker, so not being able to loan him for another season seems irrelevant. Coventry didn't end up making another club £20m by showing faith in Gyokeres, they've gained a valuable asset on evidence so far this season.

Yes well judging by Gyorkeres' performances last season, it would have been a utterly bizarre signing to sign him permanently. There were eyebrows raised when Coventry did. Coventry didn't finish fourth last season and we did, even with signing him again this season and him being vastly improved, are they realistically going to get near that position? Doubt it. It's symbiotic - we improved Guehi and Chelsea cashed in. Pretty unlikely we'd be able to sign a player of his quality permanently.
