Laura and Rowans Big Commission … 23:51 - Jan 20 with 2691 viewsKilkennyjack

‘Wales’s political history has often seen us standing on the sidelines, reacting to events seemingly beyond our control. The newly formed Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales offers an opportunity to change this dynamic’.

Lets see what the experts think is good for Wales ?
No not you Felix.

This is one of the reasons I (speaking for myself, it's up to others if they decide not to respond) don't bother answering questions you put felix. Because all you do is either not respond, which you'e done numerous times, or you just dismiss the points made with no argument.

As i've said many times the tax figures being wrong is a statement of fact, the only thing in dispute is the amount they are out. Tax for the whole of the UK being declared at large companies HQ's is something that's been happening for a long time. So when the vast majority of those companies HQ's are in England then it's not difficult to understand that a large amount of Welsh tax is being registered as English tax. Because it's registered in England.

No one has ever argued that London and the South East don't pay more tax than they spend. And the rest of the UK, including the whole of the rest of England by the way, run at a deficit.

The only question is how much is that deficit. And in Wales' case it's far less than they tell us.

Well said John.

Do you have any evidence that Wales does not spend more than it receives tax revenues. I can only the quote the figures the ONS produces.

The point of the Barnett formula is that it redistribute tax revenues from richer areas to Scotland and Wales.

I've never claimed Wales doesn't spend more than it generates in tax. What i've always said is that the Welsh deficit which government figures claim is around £13 billion is inflated hugely.

These are the points i've made many times.

1 - Wales produces more tax than the figures show (Welsh tax registered in England). The actual total is what we need to know.

2 - If Wales was an Independent country there would be no Welsh infrastructure spend on projects in England. So we also need to know how much that currently is.

3 - The Welsh contribution to the cost of the armed forces is currently £2.3 billion. As an Independent country Wales would spend no more than £500 million a year (using Ireland as a comparison). Just this point alone removes £1.8 billion from the deficit.

Even if all my arguments were accepted and we had the actual figures there would still be a substantial Welsh deficit. As far as i'm concerned we have a right to know what that figure is. Seeing Wales continually portrayed as a begging bowl country is abhorrent to me so I want to know the truth.

The Barnett formula does indeed help to balance the economy by redistributing tax revenue around the UK, not just in Wales and Scotland but NI and large areas of England as well.

And London and the South East are the richer areas that produce an enormous amount of tax which helps the rest of the UK.

I agree, we need to know the true numbers but there is another point of view too. We always hear claims Wales is underfunded by Westminster, Drakeford has said it himself. That begs the question, how much money does Wales actually need? If we need billions more then it kind of puts the tax revenue argument to bed because even if the deficit was4-5 billion less than they claim, how many more billions does the Senedd think we need?

These are questions well never get a decent answer to. After all, Drakeford doesn't go around disputing the deficit. Neither does he put a number to how much extra cash he wants.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I believe he's referring to the Barnett formula there. I don't know how the Barnett calculations are made but Scotland gets more and NI a good deal more than Wales.

Reparations for the theft of our coal wealth is a good place to start.
Likewise the current water theft.

And the Crown Estate, like Scotland.
And airport passenger duty, like Scotland.
And police and criminal devolved, like Scotland.

John makes a great point on military over spend.
