Who was the first player to leave Saints that left you gutted? on 09:48 - Nov 25 by Wints76
Keegan (though I never saw him play).
Then Williams, then Moran.
With Steve Moran I'd agree to a degree, but more upset the fact that he never really recovered from.that back injury Also re Keegan, and lucky enough to watch him playing during those early 80's halcyon days, it was the way he went and where to!

Im not sure that it was all the back injury, he suffered that in early 1982, in 1982/83season he was scored 10 League goals and was second only to Danny Wallace who had 12.
In 1983/84 he scored 21 League goals his highest ever total and was top scorer.
In 1984/85 he missed a few games through injury, but was second with 11 only to Joe Jordan with 12, but now the goals were more spread around, Dave Armstrong got 10 and Danny Wallace 7.
His final season saw the team struggle under new manager Chris Nicholl but he still scored 8 in 24(4) league games, only Danny Wallace 8 & Dave Armstrong 10 got more, both in considerably more games played.

I was gutted for Terry Paine when we released him. I felt that he should have been allowed to stay at the club until he retired. He got a tremendous reception when he came back with Hereford, which helped soften the blow.
I'm not sure I was really gutted when Chivers left, because we knew Channon was waiting in the wings, although getting Frank Saul in part exchange made it seem worse.
There had been talk of Channon wanting to leave for a bigger club for several years before he went to Man City so we were expecting it.
The biggest blow was Keegan's departure for Newcastle because of what it cost us, including the double in 83/84. I'm convinced that if Keegan had stayed, we'd have won it.

Mark Wright, Shilts, Williams and Danny Wallace, hated seeing Williams in that Arsenal kit. Also, could never work out why Andy Townsend and Magilton both left !!

Yes, Steve Williams was a hard one to take and he never really fitted in as well at Arsenal; neither did Channon at Man City nor Danny Wallace at Man. United.
In 1989, I remember seeing Danny Wallace play for us at Maine Road on August 23rd and then play there again for Man United on September 23rd . We won 2-1 with 2 goals from a brilliant Danny Wallace; United lost 5-1 with Wallace looking totally lost.
Was disappointed when Chivers moved on and we got Frank Saul as part of the deal, definitely mugged off there, the first of many by that lot. Really gutted when Terry Paine left though, he was my boyhood hero, still is.

Kevin Keegan
In those days due to the limited capacity at The Dell you had to have a season ticket even to stand. The club waited until they sold all the season tickets then sold Keegan. Not one of the clubs finest hours.

No mention for Phil Boyer? he was pretty good in his 3 years with us, and I for one was pretty sad he left, not knowing then his replacement would become a total legend.
