Haven't been to the Valley since Dagenham and redbridge played there in the FA cup and charlton were premeirship. i dropped two micky mills at half time with some bloke who looked like Eddie tenpole from chadwell heath , and came up around the hour mark with a copious rendition of a rick wakeman solo from 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' . For some reason i had a packet of sharwoods poppadoms in my back pocket and feeling the symbiotic love for my fellow dagenhamites, i shared the spiced savoury snack out fish and loaf style feeling like george harrison on his ravi shanker bengal famine charity lp. after all that, the game ended nil nil.. scant reward for my prog rock ministrations and benevolence. They really were great times ladies and gentleman, great times. so good in fact that the second wife left me before the fu ckin' replay had a chance to kick off a week later. 30 years and later and i'm in bed happily married for a 3rd time watching us at the valley on skygo and yet another nil nil but this time in fruit of loom pj's with a flat warm lager and a tube of anusol. Urssssss!! the cycle of life and supporting queens park rangers fc. love it! [Post edited 6 Feb 22:16]

We lived in Eltham till I was ten so Charlton were our local club. I have very hazy memories of my Dad taking me to watch my first football game at the old Valley when I was six and they were playing against Blackpool in the First Division with Stanley Matthews still in the Blackpool team at the age of 41 and a crowd of fifty odd thousand. Then in the couple of years before we moved going with my primary school mates to stand behind the goal and cheer on the goalkeeper Willie Duff, whose name has curiously stayed in my mind.

My Mum often spoke about her teenage years as a Charlton supporter. The goalkeeper in her day was Sam Bartram. She used to stand behind the goal with her mates and pat him on the back when he stepped back to take a goal kick (no playing out from the back in those days). I once asked her what she remembered from her first game (it would probably have been around 1946/47). “The moaning afterwards”, she replied. So not much has changed! She was so taken with the game that she joined the fledgling South London Ladies team in the late 40’s/early 50’s. This was a team set up and run by George McCarthy, a Deptford man with Millwall connections, who seems to have been something of a pioneer in the women’s game. They had crowds of up to 3,000 watching them. Disco and John’s memories prompted me to go on a trawl through the archives in search of crowd scenes from those days. Truly incredible, particularly the ones from the old East Terrace. I’m not competent enough to post any but they’re well worth a look for those who may be interested.

My first memory of Charlton was watching QPR there…stood on the old banking watching (I think) Steve Burke and Ian Stewart on the wings. And of course loads of aggro and running battles behind the away end goal …early 80s?

If I recall we were top of the league and their fans were a lot more hairy than today. Great atmosphere, you could feel the hatred. That massive terrace was like the side of a mountain.

Must have been Alan's dream to leave bernd schuster and maradona behind to team up with the hairy Homo Erectus duo of Derek hales and Martin Robinson! PS ..me farmer giles have eased up a bit today, they were throbbing like a mick karn bassline last night. [Post edited 7 Feb 14:12]

I was there with a load of herberts from the Grove, after a string of confrontations we ended up in the mysterious back streets of SE149 no idea how to get home, could have been in Kazhakstan for all we knew. Some might still be wandering around trying to head west.

You could walk all the way around the valley terraces at that time and a lot of R's went into their end to err..introduce themselves. It was something of a carnival as both Millwall and West Ham had a presence within that area.

That confirms another of my distant memories Boston. I thought I remembered going to stand behind the Charlton goal at one end and then walking round to the other end for the second half to do the same.I was thinking it couldn’t really have happened like that when I posted yesterday but your post has made me realise that it actually did happen as I’d remembered. The other thing that strikes me is how much safer it must have been for kids in the late 1950’s. I’m not sure too many parents would be happy for their nine year olds to go to football grounds unaccompanied by an adult these days but it seemed perfectly safe and reasonable then.
| Charlton Memories ...like tears in rain.. on 07:46 - Feb 8 with 1057 views | DWQPR | First time I went to Charlton was with my Dad in 1981/82. Beat them 2-1 courtesy of the best save I have ever seen and to this day by John Burridge who somehow managed to twist and change direction midair to a 30 yarder that took a heavy deflection, which he managed to tip over the bar. Stood up the top of the east terrace which was a lot less packed than this picture. Plenty of ‘raids’ going on in the Charlton end including the rolling down on the terrace of the huge old industrial dustbins! Happy days. | |
