The 11 people killed by the deadly wildfire tearing through Almeria are believed to have been British, it has emerged.
The updated figures were confirmed at around 7am on Friday by Andalucia’s emergencies minister Antonio Sanz, amid fears that more victims could be found.
The official death toll was revised down from the 12 fatalities reported overnight following further verification by emergency services.
Victims reportedly British
According to the first information released by authorities, the 11 victims were found near Bedar after attempting to escape the flames from isolated homes and rural properties.
Emergency crews discovered four victims inside a car, while the remaining seven were found after abandoning their vehicles and attempting to escape on foot.
‘Unfortunately, the decision to take another route rather than the evacuation route became a real trap,’ Sanz said.
The minister described the blaze as ‘terrible’ and ‘extremely complex’, citing the scattered rural homes, steep terrain and the exceptional speed at which the fire spread.
Authorities also ordered the lockdown of Bedar, a measure Sanz said helped prevent an even greater loss of life.
