Ten out field players pressing eleven players as you have to include the goalie the way we press , there with always be a spare player somewhere on the pitch for the opposition. Better teams will exploit that space for the spare man unless the whole team get the high press right and our goalie has to act as a sweeper but that also requires pace in certain areas of the pitch. Crowding the midfield then sounds a good idea but if the opposition leave their midfield players upfield who will attack the channel between the fullback and the centrehalves, then that can drag the fullback in leaving the wingers spare, midfield has to act in unison with the wingers to ensure they track back to mark players properly hard to do if you are trying a hard press as accurate long balls find the spare men bypassing the press, it is why a lot of teams let the team in possession have the ball deep in their own half making them have to commit players forward to try and unlock a stubborn defence, they wait for the mistakes and counter with player with pace and skills.
We were out done by poor marking in the press and errors in possession.
We have seen it before so many times under Duff, Martin, Williams and Sheehan when the team doesn't get things right when dealing with the opposition's skills and plans.
We move on another game another team to contend with. In that second half we had got ourselves back in the game but then showed a lack of patience and control making mistakes in areas dangerous to us as we pressed forward turning the ball over without adequate cover in place. |  |
