The same thing happened in Wales, the LGA's pushed back and the Senedd gave up.
Local government needs reforming, we don't need so many councils and then there'd be a lot of money freed up for essential services.
If Westminster thinks they should cut the LGA's in England then Wales clearly needs reforming too, by the English numbers we have 3 too many in comparison right now..
I suppose the big question is why do they find it so hard to push through, why does government not have the power to make it happen more quickly? How much will this review cost? |  | |  |

I think the question is why did they start work before agreeing the governance for change. As you say it has happened before, it stinks of incompetence. |  |

To my mind, part of the problem is the progressive expansion of legal regulation into domains like politics, welfare and industry -what some academics call juridifcation. Of course, this is very much what people like Starmer and Hermer encouraged, Things have got to this stage where almost any major new programme or innovation finds itself tied up in legal knots. | | | |
